CHATTOOGA AMBULANCE BACKS AWAY FROM TRAFFIC MISHAP
Injured Woman Rushed To Chattooga Hospital
Hospital Awaits Word
On Extension, Rating
Officials of Chattooga
County Hospital at mid-week
were still awaiting a response
from the State Health Plann
ing Agency (SHPA) on
whether an extensior will be
granted on a certificate of need
to expand Oak View Nursing
Home.
Mrs. Betty Wollstein, ex
ecutive director of the facility,
said Wednesday that the state
agency should Kave received a
letter from her office Monday
asking for an extension of the
current March 19 deadline for
getting construction under
way on the expansion.
A letter of response, rather
than a phone calf is expected
from SHPA, Mrs. Wo?lstein
said.
FUTURE
The future of the expansion
may hinge on SHPA's answer.
The Hospital Authority receiv
ed a one-year certificate of need
for a 63-ied expansion of Oak
View. Construction was to
have started during that period
of time. However, the Authori
ty was unable to complete
financing arrangements for the
project during that time and
received a six-month extension,
which will expire on March 19.
All financial details for a
$1.4-million Farmers Home
Administration loan aren't ex
pected to be finished by that
date.
That letter indicated that it
was the final extension the
state would grant. However,
Mrs. Wollstein said she had
discussed with SHPA the
delays that had affected the
project and was told to submit
a narrative of the problems
CLASS TWO
In addition, Mrs. Wollstein
said Wednesday that she was
attempting to check out a
report on Chattooga being
placed in class two of the
Primary Care Health Man
power Shortage Areas
(PCHMSA) in Georgia. The list
is com%iled annuefi}y by the
federal Department of Human
Services in Washington, D. C.
Group one includes areas
with no physicians at all and
class two includes areas where
there are less than one firimary
car ;l)hysician for each 5,000
people.
According to the Associate
Press, once the physician
population ratio is determined,
any area that has a poverty
rate %reater than 20 percent, or
an infant mortality rate greater
‘than 20 deaths per 1.0%{) live
births, is moved up one
category to demonstrate that
the physician shortage is more
acute.
Chattooga, Bartow, South
Walker and Paulding Counties
in Northwest Georgia are in
the class two listing, as releas
ed last Aug. 31 by the
PCHMAS.
ONE-THIRD
More than a third of the
rural counties in Georgia — in
cluding Chattooga — have
been ciasignated as having a
shortage of primary care
physicians.
The Chattooga Authority
has been seeking additional
physicians for the county in an
efforft to boost the census of
the hospital and improve its
finances.
President Reagan on Dec. 2
signed a $2.3-million appropria
tions bill to continue the Na
tional Health Service Corps.
Mrs. Wollstein said the
county would have a better
chance of obtaining a physician
if it'is rated high in the needs
category by the Corps through
the PCHMAS system. An ef
fort earlier this year to improve
the rating appeared to have
been unsuccessful.
AUGUST LIST
However, Mrs. Wollstein
said she was attempting to
determine if the Aug. 31 list
showed that the county’s

The Environmental Protec

Department of Human
Resources checked several
sites for suitability as a new
landfill, Chattooga Count
Commissioner Harry Powefi
said Wednesday.
The commissioner said an
official with the EPD and Bud
Tinney, who has been con
tracted by the county to
operate the current landgll on
Penn Bridge Road, visited
several possible sites Tuesday.
The current landfill has
almost reached its capacity.
A controversy has raged
between the county and Sum
merville recently over how the
landfill issue should be
