Decision
Awaited
No decision had been made
as of Tuesday afternoon
whether to grant Oak View
Nursing Home another exten
sion on its certificate of need,
state officials said.
Michael Clark of the State
Health Planning Agency
(SHPA) said no decision had
been made on the request by
the Chattooga Count
Hospital Authority, whicfi
governs the nursing home.
EXTENSION
The extension was sought
by the Authority after it ap
peared that the March 19
deadline for getting construc
tion under way on a planned
Oak View extension couldn't
be met.
Paperwork on a Farmers
Home Administration (FmHA)
loan application has taken
longer than expected, Authori
ty members said. .
The Authority sought a cer
tificate of need on a 70-bed ad
dition more than two years ago
and a one-year certificate for a
63-bed addition was approved
in late 1986. A six-month ex
tension was sought successful
ly by the Authority when it ap
peared that the original
deadline couldn’t be met. That
deadline will expire next March
19.
FINAL?
SHPA said in its letter
granting the extension that it
would be the final one approv
ed. However, a narrative of the
reasons for the delay in getting
construction started was sent
to SHPA this month, along
with supporting documen
tation.
Clark said the documenta
tion was still being reviewed
early this week.

Courthouse
Renovation
Next Year?
Renovation of the interior
of the Chattooga County Cour
thouse to remove fire hazards
probably won't begin until
after the trial of Jonathen Jar
rells, Commissioner Harry
Powell said.
The trial of the 30-year-old
Oceana, W. Va. man has been
set tentatively for next Feb. 22.
The State Fire Marshal in
spected the courthouse last
Aug. 25 and found 34 viola
tions, some of them major. The
state then fiave the county 60
da[\)'s to make corrections or to
submit a proposal for making
the necessary changes within
that time.
LETTER
Commissioner Powell wrote
to the state in early September
asking for more information on
the inspection but the state
didn’t respond to his letter un
til Oct. 30 when fire inspectors
visited the commissioner.
A verbal agreement was
reached at that meeting for
Powell to submit a plan for
making the corrections. It was
not until mid-November that
Powell received the names of
three architectural firms that
have experience in courthouse
renovation.

Powell said late last week
that he had not contacted the
firms because he had been
unable to reach Chattooga
Superior Court Judge Joseph
“Bo" Loggins about what
changes the judge wants in the
second floor courtroom,
With numerous hearings
scheduled in the Jarrells case
and court set for next year,
Powell said he probably would
wait until after court is over
before taking any further
steps.
