Students at North Summerville Elemen
tary School have received seven responses
from balloon-carried cards launched from
the school last Nov. 20. They came from
Savannah, Tarrytown, Daisy, Gray and
Floyd County. Pictured are special educa

tion of the National League of
Cities, where local government
leaders and presigential can
didates focused attention on
major issues facing ‘‘Home
Town America.”’ :
The 1987 Congress of
Cities, the last large gathering
of ;l)ublic officials prior to the
early 1988 presicfiantial con
tests, drew 5,000 delegates to
Las Vefias from cities and town
throughout the United States.
The five-day conference includ
ed dozens of workshops and
other special sessions built
around tfie theme of ‘*Choosing
America’'s Future.”
Several presidential cand
diates were scheduled to ad
dress the meeting, including
Gov. Michael Dukakis of
Massachusetts and the Rev.
Jesse Jackson, and a special
plenary session on urban issues
and the 1988 elections also was
held.
NLC President Cathy
Reynolds, councilmember-at
larlge of Denver, reminded the
delegates that ‘“‘each of us
came into public office because
voters supported our ideas.
Priority issues identified by
an Election 'BB Task Force of
local officials include educa
tion, drug abuse, poverty, at
risk chilsren, infrastructure,
job training, housing and
neighborhoods, crime, and
working with local
government.

the Council, said churches are
needed to provide food to the
pantry in Bctober. November
and December, 1988. In addi
tion, he said, additional chur
ches are needed throughout the
year to ensure that the pantry
will remain adequate to meet
emergency needs.

Kindergarten students, Sum
merville First Methodist pre
schoolers, North Summerville
Elementary 4-H Club members
and Chattooga High students
had donated ?ood to the pantry
this month.
The Council’s next meeting
will be held at 2 p.m. Monday,
Feb. 15, 1988.

Yule Dinner

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Renslow
and Mrs. Lena Wilson were
hosts for the Wilson family
Christmas dinner on Sunday.
The famili met at the Midwa
Ba%tist Church fellowship hafi
with each family bringing their
special dishes. Arproximately
60 or more people attended.
Lori, Lee and Kim Wilson
are spending the Christmas
holidays with their father,
Mike, and Beverly Wilson and
%randparents. Mr. and Mrs.
Lorenza Wilson.
The adult classes of Nor
thside church of Christ enjoyed
their Christmas get-together
this year in the form of a %ro
gressive dinner. They met Fri
ay night at the home of Dr.
Richard Compton and Mrs.
Compton for %ors d’oeuvres,
and to Ron Fisher, minister,
and Mrs. Fisher's for a salad
and to the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Ron Patty for the main
meal, spending a short while at
each home for conversation.
Desserts were enjoyed and
games played at the fellowship
annex at the church building
which was decorated in a very
festive Christmas manner.
Open House was held in the
Allmon-Colbert home on Gray
Street Thursday. The occasion
was the birthday of Mrs. Clara
Allmon with Lorene Colbert as
hostess. Neighbors, friends and
relatives calfed throughout the
day bringing good wishes and
cards. Mrs. Colbert's
refreshments were served buf
fet style. The lovely Christmas
tree and decorations added to
the birthday party.
Pastor Joseph A. Blevins
and Mrs. Blevins were called to
Louisville, Ky., over the
weekend due to the death of
Mr. Blevins' mother.
Mrs. Dorothy Brewster was
breakfast l\%uest for muffins
and coffee Monday in the home
of Mrs. Ola Mae Broome.
Stacy Blackmon was guest
over the weekend of the Dan
ny Dooley family in Walker
County.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Culpef)-
ger's guests for an early
hristmas party and dinner on
Sunday were their children and
grandchildren. Visiting from
outh Carolina were Mr. and
Mrs. Ricky Culpepper, Shon
and Shelby. Also enjoying the
famik' gatherinf were Vickie
Maddux and Allison, and Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Owings.
Mr. and Mrs. Bilfy Hayes
and Lorene Colbert were
among the large number of
pe(()fle who attended the 60th
wedding anniversary celebra
tion for Mr. and Mrs. W. O.
Stewart of Rome. The affair
was held at the Central church
of Christ on Avenue “A" and
was hosted by their children.
The Hayeses and Ms. Colbert
stayed for the evening message
which was delivereg by Mr.
Stewart.
Mrs. Annie Rae Farmer
was honored on her birthd:fi
Saturday, Dec. 19, with a sm
party at her home on Union
Street. Hostesses were Polly
Hayes and Lorene Colbert.
Neighbors, friends and
relatives called to wish Mrs.
Farmer a ‘‘happy birthday.”
Mrs. Hayes ang Ms. Colbert
served holiday refreshments to
all those who attended.

timist Club will not meet Fri
day or on Friday, Jan. 1, due to
the holidays.
