TVA Rates
To Retreat
L
Six Percent
Effective Saturday,
residential consumers of TVA
generated electriciéy — in
cluding those in Chattooga
County — will receive a rate
reduction of six percent, said
Elvin J. Farrar, Eeneral
manager of North Georgia
Electric Membership Corp.
(EMC).
The rollback results from
an out-of-court settlement bet
ween TVA and the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE).
The settlement was for
$l.B-billion and concluded a
legal battle between the two
federal agencies that began
last May. In the 1970's D%)E
entered into a contract to pur
chase power from TVA, but
earlier in 1987 broke the con
tract and began cutting its
payments by $225-million a
}l"ear. At the time, DOE said
VA was overcharging the
department. In an effort to
recover part of the loss, TVA
passed a rate increase to its
customers and filed suit
against DOE for breaking the
contract.
The mid-December out-of
court settlement was viewed
by Farrar as ‘‘a major
Christmas present for area con
sumers."’
“We are just elated over the
rate decrease and DOE's deci
sion to accept its obligation to
its contract with TVA,” he
added.
North Georgia EMC pur
chases its power on a wholesale
rate from TVA and distributes
it to more than 61,000
customers in seven northwest
Geor%'ia counties: Chattooga,
Whitfield, Murray, Gordon,
Catoosa, Walker and Floyd.
Officials of both TVA and
DOE lauded the settlement.
While the dispute was being
worked out, ’FVA reportedly
lost about $124-million in DOE
payments.
