Chattooga Countians were
preparing to celebrate the ar
rival of 1988 with New Year's
Eve parties and church watch
night services later today.
The traditional celebration
time also drew words of cau
tion from local lawmen about
drinking alcoholic beverages
and driving.
One person was killed and
another injured in two separate
traffic accidents in the county
during the 102-hour Christmas
holiday period last week. Police
said tKey will step up patrols
and enforcement today and
this weekend in an eff‘(,)rt to
prevent a repeat of the
tragedy.
DEATH
John Bryant Nelson, 31,
Summerville Rte. 3, was one of
20 Christmas fatalities in
Georgia last week. Sgt. Joe
Gossett of the Georgia State
Patrol said Nelson was killed at
2:25 a.m. Dec. 24, Christmas
Eve morning.
Nelson was driving a 1967
model pickup truck north on
Highway 10(;) when it went out
of control in a curve 1.5 miles
south of Sumrherville, Gossett
said. The truck ran off the east
side of the road, struck a utili
ty pole and traveled another 30
feet, coming to rest on its side,
the lawman said.
The Jaws of Life had to be
used to remove Nelson's body
from the vehicle. He was the
county's fifth traffic death in
1987.

For Police
By Powell
Chattooga County Commis
sioner Harry Powell said
Wednesday that he had *‘ten
tatively’ hired Mahew Black
to be one of two ‘‘county
policemen’’ who would attempt
to obtain evidence against
litterers.
Powell said he was consider
,ing an additional person and
seeking a vehicle for the pair to
drive, starting sometime next
week.
Neither person will be a cer
tified lawman, Powell said,
displaying the ‘*‘Handbook for
Georgia County Commis
sioners.” Instead, the “‘police”
will watch dumpsters in the
county, attempt to get the tag
numbers of litterers and get
evidence from garbage
alongside roadways.
When sufficient evidence
has been obtained, Powell said,
the pair will seek warrants
from Magistrate's Court and
get certified lawmen with the
sheriff’s office to make the ac
tual arrests.
Powell said he had talked
with State Court Judge T. J.
Espy about the littering situa
tion and with burning trash in
dumpsters. Espy agreed to im
pose a fine of SIOO against
those convicted of littering, the
commissioner said. ;

tremely close eye on motorists
who d‘;ive suspiciously this

want to make every possible ef
fort to get drunk, reckless and

“Quite a few motorists
drive through Summerville
during the ho%idays and my of
ficers will be on the lookout for
drunk drivers in an effort to
get them off the streets before
they kill themselves, their
passengers or someone in
another vehicle,” said Police
Chief Arlen Thomas.
BELTS
“Again, I want to urge
everyone to consider using seat
belts, not only during the
holidays, but all the time. The,
do save lives. Some peoplye
claim that they feel ‘tied in’ but
that's better than being placed
permanently inside a coffin. I
also want to remind parents
that the law requires them to
use child safety seats for small
children,”” Thomas said.
David Starkey, Trion police
chief, also said his department
will patrol that town's streets
heavily in an effort to eliminate
drunk drivers and reckless
drivers.
Sgt. Gossett said the Patrol
will again be out in force in
Chattooga throughout the holi
day period. A special effort will
be made to apprehend drinking
drivers the speeders, he
pointed out.

FIREWORKS
Firemen also pointed out
that it is illegal to possess or
shoot fireworks in Georgia. The
fireworks are usually readily
available just across the
Alabama state line, they said,
but it is illegal for Chattooga
Countians to purchase
fireworks and bring them back
into Georgia — even sparklers.
Firemen warned that
dangerous fires or explosions
could result from use of the il
legal fireworks.
CHURCH
On the oposite end of the
“Earty“ spectrum, a number of
churches and church groups
throughout the county had
planned special “‘watch night”
services tonight, markets by
singing, preaching, Bible
study, games and socializing.
