$527,000 In Marijuana
Plants Seized Locally
Thirty-one state and local
law enforcement authorities
Tuesday located and con
fiscated some $527,500 worth
of marijuana plants at 31 loca
tions around Chattooga
County.
Sheriff Gary McConnell
said the early summer raids
were similar to those made in
late summer, 1987 in which
more than sl-million of the il
licit weed was found and
destroyed.
Two Georgia State Patrol
helicopters were used in sear
ching for marijuana lglfmts
throughout the coumay. leven
sherié‘s deputies and 20 state
officers mounted the intensive
ground and air operation.
785 PLANTS
A total of 227 plants was
located and seized in the
Holland-Chattoogaville area,
along with 558 more plants
found in the Dry Creek, K/lenlo
Highway-Sunnydale areas and
The Summerville News, Thursday, June 16,1988 . . . ..
other scattered locations,
Sheriff McConnell said.
Claude Nix, a Georgia
Bureau of Investigation agent
who participated in the raids,
said the street value of each
domestic marijuana plant was
SSOO each while the value of
the highly g%ego sinsellnilla
variety was r plant.
Ninet))'l sinsemilla plgflt,spwere
found, along with 695 domestic
variety glants. the state said.
The 785 plants confiscated
Tuesday in the county had a
street value of an estimated
$527,500, Nix said.
FEWER
McConnell said fewer
plants were found this year
than in the past because of
more aggressive law enforce
ment, drought conditions that
have made it more difficult to
Erow marijuana, and Gov. Joe
rank Harris' ‘‘Just Say No"
education program against
drug use.
This marks the sixth year
of operation of the joint state
federal-local task force, Sheriff
McConnell said. The task force
is composed of the GBI, State
Patrol, Department of Natural
Resources, National Forest
Service, National Guard,
Georgia Game and Fish Com
mission, Geo:fiia Forestry
Commission and local lawmen.
Chatboolga was the first
county in Northwest Georgia
hit by the task force, the sheriff
said.
LATE SUMMER
Since last year’s raids took
place in late summer, most
marijuana Flnnts at that time
were more fully developed and
taller than they are this early
in the growi:g season, McCon
nell continued. He anticipated
that the task force may return
to the county later this sum
mer to conduct additional raids
on pot growers.
Among those collecting the
marijuana Tuesday were
McConnell, Chief Dep. Jadie
Price, Chief Inv. Ron Turner,
Inv. Greg Latta and Deps.
David Westbrooks, Don
Bethune and Bruce Peek.
The dpot was destroyed
Wednesday in the furnace of
Mt. Vernon Mills, Trion.
