STATE FIRE MARSHAL TOM EBERHART (L)
Welcomed By Rotarian Evans Scoggins
Fire Marshal’s
Duties Outlined
Most people in Georgia
don't have any idea what the
State Fire Marshal's Office
does, according to the man who
should know.
Tom Eberhart, the state’s
fire marshal, addressed the
Summerville-Trion Rotary
Club Monday about the
responsibilities of his office.
His office has 130
employees, with 28 workir:ig
out of the Atlanta head
(l]uarters, the fire marshal said.
t has five divisions: engineer
ing, arson-inspection, hospitals
and health care facilities,
hazardous materials and
manufactured housing.
MOBILE HOMES
The state produces some
50,000 to 55,000 manufactured
housing units per year, he said,
and his office inspects each one
to make sure they are built ac
cording to fire safety stan
dards. All mobile homes built
outside the state and brought
into Georgia for sale are also in
spected by the fire marshal’s
office, said Eberhart.
His office also has the
responsibility for making sure
that all nursing homes and
hospitals meet the state’s life
safety codes, as well as federal
regulations if they accept
Medicare or veterans as
patients.
Explosives, flammable li
quids and gases are also
regulated by his office,
Eberhart said, adding that he
had high praise for t%e bottle
gas industry in Georgia.

has only five people to review
construction plans for safe;fi
codes and fire prevention in
public buildings, he continued,
noting that &se office has a
10-week backlog of plans to
review.
“You can see now that we
are drastically understaffed
and trying to play catchup all
the time,” Eberhart said.
Inspectors check churches,
schools and similar structures
on a routine basis to make sure
thefi are safe, he continued, and
he has 20 arson investigators
scattered throughout the state.
Arson is a problem that
hasn’t decreases in Georgia,
Eberhart indicated. Motives
for arson vary with each in
dividual, he noted in citing
several unusual cases in
vestigated by his office in re
cent years.
His office also has an arson
strike force of six men to pro
be all major suspicious fires,
Eberhart continued.
PRISON
His office was called in to
check the Atlanta Federal
Prison after the siege ended
last winter, the fire marshal
said. Obviously, the fires that
destroyed several structures
were arson, Eberhart said, and
the problem could have been
Frevented had there been a
ockdown of all prisoners im
mediately after a federal prison
in Louisiana was taken over by
inmates.
He described arson as “‘a
most heinous crime against
society.”
Eberhart resides in Athens
and commutes to Atlanta dai
ly. He was introduced by
Rotarian Evans Scoggins.

A Summerville couple has
filed a lawsuit against a Chat

and replace a damaged section
of the roof, the lawsuit said.
The Hurley's paid Rodgers
$7,762 for the work, the litiga

They accused him of ‘‘tor
