Let’s Go Fishing
By J. P. “SCOTTY" SCOTT
This week’s hot spot on Lake Weiss is behind the Bax
ter's Lighthouse Restaurant, Cedar Bluff, Ala.
When you put in at their free boat launch, go to your
left to fish up the Chattooga River, go to your right to
fish down the river, fishing stump rows, river channels,
Cobia Mill Pond and under the iron bridge to big water.
FISHING NEWS
Frank Lemming, Lookout Mountain and Melton Brad
ford, Rising Fawn, had a nice trip at J. R.’s Sunday, pull
ing in the limit of bass.
Paul Ward and Paul Cooper stayed on the Tennessee
River three days and caught plenty to eat, but were
hampered by moss and seaweed. Daniel, 6, caught eight
bass, a lot of bream fishing Hog Island from his grand
father's pontoon boat. I couldn't tell who had the most
fun, Daniel or gramp's, Ron Dail.
Junius James and wife caught the limit of bass average
1%, pounds each, using minnows in eight feet of water.
Henry Baxter of Baxter's Lighthouse Restaurant kept
12 bass and some crappie. Largest crappie weighed 22
pounds using a light at night on minnows.
On May 17-18, Eric Edwards and Tammy caught 27
crappie at 7 a.m. Total weight was 30% pounds. They us
ed minnows on a No. 4 hook.
Billy Wehunt of Jamestown on June 8, using two
spring lizards, caught two catfish, one a 17-pounder and
one a 22-pounder.

‘To Kill A Cockroach’
By JESSICA MORRISON
*
IT ISN'T EASY to kill the Asian
cockroach with a tennis shoe. Since the im
ported pest flies, Florida homeowners —
until now — have needed something else.
Their dilemma may be solved by a new
product that kills nearly 100 flecent of the
Asian cockroaches living in their yards in
just a few days, thanks to U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture insect researchers and
two private firins in*TamPa, Fla.
A POISON BAIT made by Southern
Mill Creek Products has been registered by
the Environmental Protection Agency for
outdoor use. The poison bait comes in
pellet form to be distributed by a fertilizer
spreader.
It does not harm pets or other animals,
according to Richardplgrenner and Richard
Patterson of USDA's Agricultural
Research Service.
A gest control firm called Lady Bugs
Pest Control donated time to help the
sciencists test l;he _bf.it. ¢
AT THE SUGGESTION of the agen
cy scientists, Southern Mill Creek modified
its mole cricket bait to kill the cockroaches.
“When they asked us what to look at for
control, we thought a product already
rehgistered for use outdoors would be best.
That way homeowners would have
something to use by spring, when adult
roaches start f}l)fng again,” Brenner says.

the pest has been spreading. It now infests
the southern two-thirds of the state, and
is headed north to Georgia.

THIS COCKROACH is particularly ir
ritating because it flies at dusk from its
daytime home in lawns and leaf litter to
any well-lit area — windows, doors, lamps,
walls and TV screens. It has been known
to fly onto people's white shirts.
C%her distressing facts about the roach
were discovered by the agency scientists:
* As suspecteX and feared, the Asian
cockroach can breed with German
cockroaches.
* * *
* HYBRID SONS and daughters fly —
but not as well as the Asian parents.
* Offspring possess some of the
pesticide resistance that their German
parents have acquired over many genera
tions of insecticide exposure.
* People allergic to German
cockroaches will be just as allergic to the
Asian ones, based on cooperative work
with scientists at the Alfizrgic Disease
Research Laboratory of the Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, Minn.
& * *
THE SCIENTISTS are traveling to the
roach’s native Asia, where they will look
for natural enemies. According to the scien
tists, if people don't need fly swatters or
fertilizer spreaders to control the roach
there, then organisms might be keeping it
under control. *‘lf we could locate those
organisms, then we could import them as
a potential biological control,” Patterson
says.
That may come before the roach arrives
in Chattooga County.
