SMS Students Go To 6 Flags
Summerville Middle
School, formerly Summerville
Junior Hifh School, recently
made its 16th annual trip to
the Six Flags Over Georgia
Amusemen Park near
Atlanta.
Gwen Bentley, teacher at
the school and organizer of the
trips, said interest seems to
gain momentum yearly,
Because many of the
students are responsible for
earning their own money for
the trip, Mrs. Bentley begins to
collect increments fzr tl%?trip
in February for the summer
event. Money is accepted,
receipts are written and kept
u}? with by the students, so
that they will always have a
record of their account balance,
Many of the students would
not have the opportunity to go
if the total cost of the trip had
to be paid at one time.
$25 COST
The trip on a chartered bus
and the admission into the
Bark is usually about $25.
ecause of the amount,
payments are usually accepted,
in $5 increments.
“But many times where a
student has collected
aluminum cans and mowed
lawns for the funds, I will
usually end up taking an
amount, no matter how smal{
Some of the students who do
go on the trip have never been
to Six Flags and many have
never traveled outside Chat
too%la and Floyd counties. All
of the effort is worth while,”
she said.
Although Mrs. Bentley is in
charge of organizing and ar
ranging the trig. securing
tickets, etc., she told The News
that without the school’s
teachers volunteerin?l to give
18 or more hours of their time
during the Saturday trip, it
woul(f be impossible.
This year 238 students
made the trip. Teachers
assisting this year were Harry
