Suicide Prevention Topic
Of In-Service Instruction
About 25 Chat.t.(:iga Coun
tf' educators received instruc
tion in the causes and preven
tion of suicide among young
people during post-planning for
teachers last week.
Dr. Gerald Jennings, pro
fessor of psycholog‘y; at Berry
Collige, Yresent,edt e seminar
at Menlo School. He had
greviousl¥ addressed the
ummerville-Trion Optimist
Club on the importance of
education.
The speaker outlined social
pressures that contribute to
suicide, including feelings of
not “belonging," not having a
best friend, conflicts about
wantin%independence but hav
ing to be dependent, putting
high importance on what
money buys and what peers are
wearingé]poor social habits and
uncritical acceptance of deviate
behavior.
SONGS, TV
Violence on television and
in movies also helps reduce the
shock of serious injury or
death, he indicated.
Some popular songs, in
cludinf Ozzy Osborne's
*“‘Suicide Success” and a lyric
in the M.A.S.H. television
show's theme sor;f that
“’suicide is painless,” also tend
to encourage feelings that
suicide isn't the end, he
indicated.
Stress in childhood and
adolescence also contributes to
feelings of wanting to escape
throu%h suicide, Dr. Jennings
indicated.

Seminar Held At Menlo School For All Teachers
State Court Okays Pleas
Dual careers by parents
often leave little quality time
with children, he indicated. To
day's society offers a limited
support system with working
parents or single parent homes,
whereas in the past there was
close and frequent contact with
grandparents and other
relatives, he indicated.
RELATIONSHIPS
Boai-girl relationships are
also taken very seriously at an
earlly age, the speaker said.
Children also have a feeling of
wanting something ‘‘now,” he
added, and their bodies are go
ing throufih chemical and
physical changes that they
don’t often ungerstand.
The decreasing role of the
church and lack of religious
values have added to the stress
felt by youngsters, Dr. Jenn
ings agreed after one of the
teachers present brought up
the issue.
Teachers should notice
signs of personal stress in
younfilters, including changes
to feeli fgs of h?elessness, lack
of self-confidence, anger,
dissatisfaction and changes in
habits.
Teachers should look for
ways to intervene if they
suspect a child or teen-ager is
about to take his or her ‘l‘i%e, he
said.
CONFRONT
If such signs are seen,
teachers shoulgnconfront the
youth and ask otfen-ended
questions, he said. Asking

whether a child has considered

shouldn't be reluctant to bring
up the issue.
He also outlined the steps

“COPYCAT”
After a suicide, teachers
must take steps to prevent
“cogycat" suicides by other
students, he noted. Students
who commit suicide shouldn’t
be “glorified,” he said, while
other students who are poten
tial suicide victims should be
identified.
The school curriculum can
also be used to build self
esteem, communication skills,
support groups, peer counsel
ing, leadership, stress and cop

indicated.
Staff development pro

all teachers are aware of the
