‘Quick’ Balloon Found
Released By Jonesboro Bible School Students
By BUDDY ROBERTS
Staff Writer
DOYAL QUICK was awakened Mon
day morning by the barking of his dogs.
Upon investigating, he found, not a Frow
ler, but something far less harmful — a
helium balloon released in Jonesboro.
It was about 5:30 in the morning, and
the dogs started barking,” Quick said. “'I
went out in the yard, and there was the
balloon.” Doyle resides on Highway 48,
where he operates a convenience market.
QUICK SAID that the balloon was 16
to 18 inches in diameter and had a%parent

JOHNNY CRAWFORD (L) WELCOMES DALE WILLINGHAM
To Summerville-Trion Optimist Club
First Civilization Here
Belonged To Indians
Chattooga County is
celebrating its 150th anniver
sary this year, but Northwest
Georgia and Chattooga Coun
ty civilization predates the
establishment o? our present
county boundaries by
thousands of years.
The first civilization here
belonged to North American
Indians. According to Dale
Willingham, evidence of In
dians and their ancient culture
can still be found in Chattooga
County by those who know
what to look for.
HERITAGE
“Let's not be guilty of leav
ing some of our most impor
tant things exposed to the
elements,” Willingham told the
Summerville-Trion Optimist
Club on Friday. *‘This area is
rich in historical value. Lots of
these artifacts can be overlook
ed by normal observers.”
Willingham is the principal
at Lyerly School and is an avid
amateur Indian historian. He
has found all kinds of Indian
artifacts in Chattooga County,
including a line drawing in a
cave he said is a picture of two
men hunting bison. Bison used
to inhabit this area of North
Carson’s Grand Opening
Georgia, he said.
HISTORY
Relics of Indian culture
found here can be 3,500 years
old or older, Willingham said.
Cherokee and Creek Indians
were the main tribes here
although there were some
others.
Mound building, character
istic of some Indian civiliza
tions, never flourished in Chat
tooga County, although mound
buifding seems to have been
prevalent around the entire
area now known as Chattooga
County.
Indian settlements could be
found on every stream and
river bank, Wi{lingham said.
The area along the Chattooga
River that stretches from Trion
to Summerville is. called
“Island Town'’ by researchers
today.
Unlike the stereotypes of
Indians seen on television, the
Indians of Chattooga County
were not only hunters, but
farmers and fishermen as well.
*“The women were the farmers
and the men were the hunters
and the younfil boKs did a lot of
fishing,” Willingham said.
Mackie assists customer Janice Mills in
renting several movies from the store's
collection, which claims to contain the
largest selection of family-oriented movies
in the county. (Staff I}’hoto By Buddy
Roberts).
Baptist Church of Jonesboro to advertise
a cgurch-sponsored vacation Bible school.
The words ‘“Jesus Loves You And
Wants To Be Your Friend" were printed
on the balloon, which was attached to a
card outlining Bible school activities for
June 27 to July 1.
* * *
QUICK SAID that he was surprised
that the balloon would travel such a
distance as it did. ‘I think it's about 160
or 170 miles between here and Jonesboro,”
he said.
Another oddity concerning the balloon
was that it apparently traveled southeast
to northwest, while prevailin% winds for
this time of year usually travel northwest
to southeast.
* * *
QUICK HAS also tried to get in touch
with the Jonesboro church, though he had
not been successful as of Tuesday.
HOUSING
Another part of Indian life
here that did not fit to the mold
was housing. “They lived in
large, low structures, adobied
in with mud. There were no
tepees,”’ Willingham said.
These low houses were built
on hills so water would not col
lect inside, and the low en
trances, covered with animal
skins, helped keep the heat in
during the colder months, he
said. A fire was kept burning
in the middle of the structure
and mud on the walls provided
good insulation, Wifiingham
said.
Animal skins and hot rocks
were used for cooking. Rocks
heated in the fire were wrapped
in animal skins and pacfied
around food that needed to be
cooked, he said. This method
was used in place of stoves, he
said.
THANK YOU
Willingham also commend
ed and thanked the Optimists
for their work with youngsters
in the community. ‘‘When you
see an opportunity to secure
victory with goungsters. be ag
gressive and go for the vic
tory,” he said.
