Rep. Darden
Appointed
To Committee
Congressman George
“Buddy” Darden has been
named by House Speaker Jim
Wright to represent the House
on the conference committee
which will work out differences
with the Senate over the fiscal
1989 defense authorization bill.
Wright's selections of con
ferees were made on the recom
mendation of House Amed Ser
vices Committee Chairman Les
Aspin.
The conferees must resolve
differences between the
$299.5-billion authorization bill
adopted in the House and the
Senate version, which provides
for the same spending fievel but
incorporates numerous _dif
ferences in allocation of those
funds. The final bill, after ap
proval by both houses of Con
gress, will go to the White
House for President Reagan’s
signature.
Darden said today he is
“excited by the opportunity to
particitpate in this important
art of the legislative process.
&’ith th:frwsure Congress is
under today to hold sg&ndinlfi
to an gccegtable level while sti
assuru;F he adequac(i' qf our
national security, the decisions
made in this conference are
critical.”
Darden noted that last
year’s defense authorization
conference committee, on
which he also served, dealt
with more than 4,000 dif
ferences between the House
and Senate versions.
