Let’s Go Fishing
SadeDr \
By J. P. “SCOTTY"” SCOTT
This week'’s ‘‘Hot Sgot" is down the Chattooga River. Put
your boat in under the bridge at Gaylesville, Ala., where Hwy.
35 crosses the Chattooga River and park your car and trailer back
on Hwy. 35. You can ask at Black's Hzndy Mart.
Fishing is good at night with minnows and willow flies. Fish
deeg channels and droi)offs, using a lantern or floating light.
tripes are plentiful everywhere.
One man came by Bii Edy Hatfield's and brasged about the
107 str.l‘fes that he caught and as he left, Big Ed smiled at me
and said, ‘“That’s just 77 over the limit."
Gene Parker, Fred Brown and I caught 100 shellcrackers Mon
day on redworms on Hog Island. Paul %ooper and I went to Hgfi
Island on Friday. We caught a few shellcrackers and lots of sm
cats. Paul and grandson had success Wednesday. The grandson,
14, caught a 5 gound carp at Hog Island again, Ray Pettyjohn
and Ray Jr. last Sunday gulled in five bass%hat weighed a total
of 19 pounds. In the last four trips, the two Ray's caught seven
bass, each over 5 pounds. They were using I{on Savage's do
nothing worms. Bank fishing at Cornwall Furnace is producing
2 to 3 pound stripes. I have a report of an 8%4-pound bass caught
above the Trion dam.
A FISHING TIP :
In your tackle box, always keep a pair of diagonal cutting
pliers to remove a fish hook from a person. Put a rag or hanky
in the person’s mouth to keep him from breaking his teeth from
the pain. Force the hook on through the other side of the skin.
Now use the pliers and cut the hook behind the barb and back
it out. Ouch!
PARTING CAST
I went to Trade Day Tuesday and bought a fly rod and reel,
spotted a bench and sat down, holding the rod up out of the way.
Alonfi came Laverne Fitzpatrick and said, ““Hi, Scotty hav
ing any luck?”’
I answered, ‘‘Yes, I have my limit of shellcrackers.”
“Well, why don’t you %) on in?" she said.
“I am wai{ing on lgred rown to row over here and pick me
up,” I said.

Some people may still be saying there are no fish in
James H. ““Sloppy’”’ Floyd State Park lake, and they
may be right now that Mickey Hughes, Doyle Jones and
Rayburn Mitchell have been catching about 30 every
time they visit the lake. Hughes stangs by their catch.
He said the fish weighed about one pound each. (Staff

Unemployment
Checks Increasing
The number and value of
unemployment checks handed
out in May in Chattooga Coun
tly; increased significantly over
the corresponding figures in
April, according to the Georgia
Department og Labor.
A total of 795 checks
valued at $106,688 was issued
last month, compared with 615
checks valued at $79,326 in
April, said John Ard of the
Labor De;l:artment. That com
pared with 401 checks valued
at $44,683 issued in May, 1987.
SMALL INCREASE
However, the number of
claims filed during the
“reference week’’ ending May
18 increased to only 184, com
pared with 182 file! during the
reference week ending April 16,
Ard said. A total of 96 claims
was filed during the reference
week endin Mgay 16, 1987.
Ard saig the number and
value of checks issued durinfi
a month don’t correspond wit
the number of claims filed that
month. For example, he noted,
a person could fiYe a claim in
March and still be receiving
benefits in May. The average
claimant in Georgia receives
benefits for 10 weeks, he said.
TEXTILES
Most of the claims filed in
May involved textile-related
unemployment, he continued.
Of the 108 textile claims filed,
79 were for partial unemploy
ment, he said, meaning that
the workers were probably laid
off temporarily or were on
“short time.” "fl‘he number of
claims filed in the non-durable
manufacturing category — in-
