summerville's ban came after the city
received a letter Monday from J. Leonard
Ledbetter, commissioner of the Georgia
Department of Natural Resources. The state
official ordered the city to implement water
conservation measures in accordance with
itls previously adopted drought contingency
plan.
VOLUNTARY
Prior to last Tuesday, Summerville water
customers were encourzfed to voluntarily
reduce their use of the valuable commodity.
The city must notify the DNR by Friday
that it has instituted a watering ban, the let
ter from Ledbetter said.
Menlo Mayor Theresa Canada said that
town's customers had voluntaril{y reduced
their use of water, as requested last week.
The town's well pumps, which at one point
were running 24 hours per day to keep u[)
with the demand, have started cutting off
for several hours due to conservation
measures, she said.
