Jobless Rate Dip
Only Slight Blip
Chattooga County'’s
unemf)loyment rate went down
in July in comparison to June
but the difference wasn't
enough to write home about. It
was still the highest in Nor
thwest Georgia.
The Georgia Department of
Labor said the county’s jobless
rate slipped from 10.9 percent
in June to 10.7 percent in Ju
ly. Both figures were far above

Walker Tech will begin offering evening classes to
prepare students to work as hairdressers, manicurists, etc.
Students will not be required to attend five days per
week, as the program is set up to allow flexibility. Hours
available for scfizduling classes are: Monday through
Thursday, 1 to 9 p.m., and/or on Fridays from 8:30 to 3
F.m. The student and instructor will decide upon mutual
y agreeable hours during these times.

Chattooga’'s unemployment
rate was again the highest in
the area. Polk County, with a
rate of 10.4 percent, was also
again the second highest in the
region.
The state rate increased
slightly from 6.4 percent in
June to 6.5 percent in July.
Walker County's rate was
6.5 percent —the same as in
June. Floyd County’s jobless
rate increased from 7.6 percent
in June to 7.9 percent in July
while Dade gounty's rate
jumped from 8.1 to 8.7 percent.
Armed Robber Sought;
1 Charged In Shooting
Summerville and Chat
tooga County lawmen are still
investigating an armed rob
bery at the%olden Gallon con
venience store on U.S,
Highway 27 early last
Saturday.
An undisclosed amount of
money was stolen from the
store at 5:40 a.m. by a robber
carrying a stainless steel or
nickel- %ated revolver, accor
ding &) Summerville Police
Sgt. Ricky Van Pelt and officer
Eddie Colbert.
ON PATROL
Both Van Pelt and Colbert
happened to be on patrol on
U. é) 27 when they saw the
suspect run out of the store.
They jumped out of their patrol
car on Stockade Road in north
Summerville and Colbert saw
the firearm in the robber’s
hand as he raced in front of the
car, reports said.
Colgert chased after the
robber through several lots and
down Allred Street. The robber
then cut through an apartment
complex and Colbert said he
lost sight of him in high weeds
between Allred and fiighland
Streets.
EMPTIED
Van Pelt and Colbert
returned to the store and Stacy
Callaway, the clerk, said she
had been robbed at gunpoint
and both cash registers had
been emptied, police said.
The robber was described
as being black, wearing a
stocking over his head and
wearinfia brown shirt and blue
jeans. He was about 6 feet and
weighed between 165 and 170
Ibs., police said they were told.

Meanwhile, a woman on
Bankston Avenue told Sgt.
Gene Nix that a man tried to
rape her in her home at 5:50
a.m. last Thursday, Sept. 1.
She said she was awakened by
a man attempting to have sex
with her, Nix reported. The
would-be rapist was wearing a
mask over his head and ran out
the door when she awakened,
the police report said.
CHILD ABUSE
A Summerville woman was
charged with child abuse Mon
day night, said lawmen.
Debbie Elaine Allen, 30,
116 E. Sixth Ave., was charg
ed with child abuse. She re
mained in custody in the Bar
tow County Jair near noon

influence (DUI) of intoxicants
in Chattooga County during
the past week — most of them
during the long Labor Day
weekend — while two others
were charged with refusing to
submit to a DUI test.

the knee with a .25 caliber
pistol, she said. Shropshire was

Gaddiston was taken first to
Chattooga Hosgital and then
transferred to Floyd Medical
Three Facing
Sex Charges
Three people, including two
juveniles, were charged with
child molestation ans sodomy
on Labor Day, according to
Chattooga County Sheriff

A 21-year-old man, Marcus
R. Hoskins, 501 Vine St., Sum
merville, was charged with ag
gravated child molestation and
sodomy Monday. He was being
held in jail near noon Wednes
day in lieu of SIOO,OOO bond.
McConnell and Turner said
Hoskins was charged in con
nection with alleged attacks
against a 10-year-old boy dur
ing the past three years. Dr.
Michell Johnson, a Rome
pediatrician with special train
ing in sexual abuse cases,
assisted in the investigation,
