T. J. Coming
Home From
.
Hospital
Terry James *“T.J."
~ Johnson, who suffered severe
burns on Aug. 31 at his home,
will be returning home on Fri
day, family members said late
Wednesday.
He had already been moved
out of the burn unit of Humana
Hospital in Augusta and was
wported doing ‘‘just fine"
ednesday afternoon.
That was not the case two
weeks a%o when T. J. was rush
ed by helicopter to the hospital
in Augusta. T. J. turned one
Aulf. 26, and five days later he
pulled a skillet of hot grease off
the stove which burned his face
and neck.
His mother put him in the
bathtub and ran cold water
over the burning fat. The
grease congealed, but T. J. was
seriously injured. He was taken
lfi' the Chattooga Emergency
edical Service to l‘gloyd
Medical Center, and from there
he was taken to Augusta.
Doctors have saitf\’i‘. J. will
probably grow out of any scar
ing caused by the burns. It
seems that when his mother
splashed cold water on his
burns she saved T. J. from sus
taining very serious burn
injuries.

Matt Back
Home From
Toronto
Eight-year-old Matt Beech
got a respite from waiting on
a nerve donor in Toronto,
Canada.
He and his father, Tommy,
returned to Summerville last
Thursday, Sept. 8, after Matt’s
doctors told him that they
would be out of town for a
week.
Matt went back to Trion
Elementary School last Friday,
his father said Wednesday.
The team of surgeons will
be back in Toronto Friday and
Matt and his dad will fly back
to Toronto Saturday.
Both were getting homesick
and were glad to be back home.
“Matt couldn’'t wait to get
back in school,” his dad said.
It was nerve-wracking for
both he and his son to have to
sit next to a telephone all the
time, waiting on a call from St.
Michaels Hospital in Toronto
that a donor had become
available.
Matt is awaiting a nerve
transplant in his left leg. It
woul(f be the first Of)eration of
its kind in the world.
The youngster and his dad
were both injured in a boating
accident in Lake Weiss, Ala,,
last May 29. His father has
recovered but Matt has only 15
to 20 percent use of his left leg
and must walk on crutches.
Canadian surgeons hope the
nerve transplant will give Matt
full use of E.is leg again.
