second Georgia Parks and
Public Land Beautification
grogram. sgonsored by the
arden Club of Georgia Inc.
and the Georgia Department of
Natural Resources.
Derrell Rush, FloKd Park
superintendent, and his wife,
Gail, were expected to attend
the awards luncheon today at
the Carter Presidential Center
in Atlanta.
INCENTIVES
The program offers incen
tives for state Fark employees
who implement improvements
to the natural beauty of their
park sites. It encourages the
use of native shrubs and
wildflowers resulting in more
drought-resistant and attrac
tive vgfietation. erosion control
and reduced maintenance.

Cothran, director of the DNR
Parks, Recreation and Historic
Sites Division.
JUDGES
Judging the entries were

University of Georgia College
of Agriculture; Ann Cram
mond, executive director of the
Atlanta Botanical Garden;
Goody Davis, Garden Club
representative from Atlanta;
Helen Hargreaves, Garden
Club representative from
Marietta; Eric Horne, hor
ticulturist for the City of
Atlanta; and Betty Jimright,
Garden Club representative
from Thomasville.
The Georgia State Parks
and Public Land Beautification
Program, begun in March,
1987, won the National Lucille
Droege Mauntel Certificate for
Conservation presented by the
National Council of State
Garden Clubs Inc.
DNR has 43 state parks
and 14 historic sites compris
ing 60,000 acres of land.
Bids Sought
For New Roof
Chattooga County Commis
sioner Harry Powell plans to
place a new roof on the sheriff’s
office.
Bids on the project are
scheduled to be opened at 10
a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the
commissioner’s office.
The August term Chat
tooga Granglfl ury noted that
the roof on the structure was
leaking, ruining part of the ceil
ing in one office.
The advertisement for bids
said the work must be com
pleted in October.
Two Complete
Degree Work
Two Summerville residents
completed requirements for
their degree at the University
of Georgia this summer.
They are Mary Doster
Parker, who completed work
for a Master of Landscape Ar
chitecture degree, and Martha
Lynne Prince, who completed
the requirement for a Bachelor
of Science in Education degree.

ville, graduated after 10 weeks
advanced infantry training at
Fort McClellan, Ala. :
He was accepted in the
U.S. Army Chemical Corps
and was af;o awarded a cer
tificate for scoring 100 percent
on the end-of-cycle test. He also
took chemical decontamination
training.
Helton is a 1988 graduate
of Chattooga County High
School. He is now stationed in
Rome.
