JERRY FORTENBERRY TALKS ON HAM RADIO AT REENACTMENT
Trion Resident Helped Neighbor Locate Daughter
Fortenberry Finds
Woman’s Daughter
After Hurricane Gilbert blew over
eastern Mexico, and a Trion woman need
ed to find out if her daughter who lives
there was still alive, she had to look no far
ther than a neighbor to get help.
Marie Perkins has a daughter living in
Cancun, Mexico, and after the hurricane
Eassed over the area, she had no way of
nowing whether her dau%hter was all
ri(fht. Telephone lines had all been knock
ed down in the high winds.
A Trion ham radio operator, Jerry
Fortenberry, heard her plea for help on a
local radio station. Fortenberry works in
the computer data section of the Finishing
Plant at the Riegel Division of Mount Ver
non Mills. He oversees the newer computer
controlled aspects of the facility.
But when Fortenberry goes Kome, the
ham comes out. His equipment includes
voice, teletype, code and computer com-

munications. He has been appointed head
of a Disaster Organization in this area.
Members of this organization are on stand
by throughout the world, to help in cases
such as the one involving Mrs. Perkins.
SIX BLOCKS
Fortenberry contacted a ham operator
in Cancun, just six blocks from where Mrs.
Perkins' daughter, Jeannie Leyva, lives.
Mrs. Leyva and her husband were fine;
they ha(f, no communication with the out
side world except for the ham operator, but
they had food and water and their house
was intact.
Fortenberry did a ‘‘wonderful job" for
her, Mrs. Perkins said in a letter to The
Summerville News. “I think this is
something everyone in Chattooga County
should know about because we never know
when disaster may strike some of our lov
ed ones,” she said.
Highway 100
Bridge Bids
Not Opened
The troubled Highway 100
bridge widening program ran
into yet another snag last Fri
day, the Georgia Department
of Transportation said.
Bids l?ad been scheduled to
be opened on the Chattooga
County project but the DOT
withdrew the project from con
sideration ‘“‘at the last minute”
because of an error in its design
e\l/ans, a spokesman said
ednesday.
The project will be rebid
and new proposals are schedul
ed to be opened at 11 a.m. Fri
day, Oct. 21.
Bids were opened earlier on
the bridge wi(f:ming over the
Chattooga River but the DOT
rejected all proposals for being
higher than the state’s
estimates or available funds for
the project. -
