Fowler Votes To
Save Manassas
Sen. Wyche Fowler has
voted with an 11-8 majority of
the Senate Enerfiy Committee
in approving a bill which would
block construction of a shon
ing mall adjacent to the
Manassas National Battlefield
Park and expand the boun
daries of the park.
Manassas National Bat
tlefield Park is located in nor
thern Virginia, It was the site
of extensive fifhtin in two
major battles of the (fivxl War.
In Jul%i 1861, the Battle of
First Manassas marked the
first major battle of the war.
In Ausust, 1862, the Battle
of Second Manassas opened
the way for the South’s first in
vasion of the North and
brouEht the Confederacy to the
height of its power
A major developer in
Virginia currently owns the
600-acre tract adjacent to the
park, which woulé be acquired
under the promsed legislation.
The site is where General Lee
assembled his troops and com
manded them during their
strike on Union forces at
Manassas.
The developer had announc
ed plans to construct a
1.2-million square foot shopg
ing mall, office park, and sub
division on the site, but preser
vationists and Civilp War
historians argued that it would
harm the historic integrity of
the park.
