~ Chattooga Countians who
did not see the reenactment of
the Battle of Chickamauga
three weeks ago will have tfie
opportunity to view the
reenactment of the Battle of
Jonesboro this weekend.
Company B, Chattooga
County’s Civil War reenact
ment unit, will participate in
the battle scenarios on both
Saturday and Sunday.
The battle reenactment will
begin each day at 2 p.m. The
battle is being held in conjunc
tion with a large fall arts and
crafts festival. There is a small
fee for admission into the
festival.
SPONSORS
The annual event is spon
sored by Georgia Division givil
War Reenactment Association
Inc. and the City of Jonesboro.
The battle reenactment
scenarios will portray events
that occurredp after Union
General Sherman ordered
troops South of Atlanta, to
destroy the railroad between
Atlanta, Macon and Savannah.
Atlanta was being supplied by
the railroad so with its destruc
tion Gen. Sherman felt that he
could bring the city to its
knees.
Confederate General John
Hood, after being alerted to
General Sherman'’s plans, sent
approximately one-fialf of his
badly outnumbered army to
stop Union forces and preserve
Atlanta’s lifeline, the railroad.
CONFEDERATES
Southern troops arrived at
Jonesboro ahead of the Federal
troops on Aug. 30, 1864. Con
federate Major General Patrick
Cleburne's troops launched an
attack the next day.
The battle reenactment
scenario will portray General
Cleburne’s attack that drove
back Union soldiers.
However the second day of
the battle proved too much for
the Soutfierners as Union
forces were reinforced. The
Confederates were then forced
to retreat from battle.
The Battle of Jonesboro
marked the end of Union
General Sherman’'s Atlanta
campaign. his march to the sea
followe?
INCIDENT
In his post-war writings,
Federal Major General Jacob
D. Cox recalled an incident
that occurred just prior to the
Battle of Jonesboro. After a
fierce battle, a Union picket
called to the badly beaten
Confederates.
“Well Johnny, how many of
you are left?"’ The answer from
the Confederate soldier
reflected the futility of the
Southern cause.
“Oh, about enough for
another killing."”
The Battle of Jonesboro
proved to be that last “‘killing.”
Bid Opening
Bids are supposed to be
opened at 10 a.m. Friday on
repairing the roof on the Chat
tooga County Sheriff’s Office,
that is, if any bids are received.
Chattooga Commissioner
Harry Powell had advertised
for bids on the project in
September but none was sub
mitted at the scheduled open
ing on Sept. 23. He then
readvertised for bids and
scheduled a new opening time
for this Friday.
