Flu Shots To
Start Today
If you're afraid of catching
influenza this iy:lear, the Chat
tooga Count}y ealth Depart
ment may offer some hope to
avoid the energy-robbing virus.
Flu shots will be available
at the health department from
8 a.m. to noon and from 1 un
til 4:30 p.m. today and each
Thursday during this fall and
early winter. The cost will be
$5.

Joan Whaley, lead nurse at
the health department, recom
mended that persons 60 years
of age or older be immunized,
along with anyone with a
chronic health problem, such as

Phillip Benson, local public
health ecfilcator for the dgpart
ment, said most people ex
perience only fever, chills,
coufih, soreness and aching in
the back, arms and legs for a
few days after the flu strikes,
others have died of more
serious complications.
“Those at highest risk of
complications from the flu in
clude the elderlf\: and people
with other health problems of
heart and lung which cause
them to see a doctor regularly
or dbe hospitalized,” g:nson
said.
Because the viruses that
cause the flu change frequent
ly, people who have been in
f‘e,cted or given flu shots in
¥revious years may become in
ected with a new strain, Ben
son warned. ‘‘This year’s flu
shot contains the strains from
Taiwan, Sichuen and Victoria
to provide immunity against
the types of flu most likely to
occur in the U. S. this winter,”
he said.
All the viruses in the vac
cine are killed so they can't in
fect anyone, Benson said, and
it will begin to provide protec
tion against the flu after about
one or two weeks.
