Kevin Keith, 15, Trion Rte.
2, was reported in *‘fair’’ con
dition Wednesday morning in
the intensive care unit of Floyd
Medical Center (FMC), Rome.
His brother, Nathan Keith, 17,
Trion Rte. 2, was treated at
FMC after the accident and
dismissed.
Two teen-age Floyd County
girls were also hurt in the
wreck. Jennifer Wiley, 17, Old
Dalton Road, Rome, was
reported in ‘‘satisfactory’’ con
dition Wednesday at FMC.
April Teresa Williams, 18, Ar
muchee, was treated at FMC
and dismissed Sunday.
NEAR CHURCH
Sgt. Michael Brock and of
ficer Carl Jackson of the Floyd
Police Department said the
near head-on accident occurred
at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday near
New Armuchee Baptist
Church.
A Walker County man who
had relatives in Chattooga
County was one of two
motorists killed in a one-vehicle
crash at 8:15 p.m. Sunday
south of LaFayette.
Killed were David H.
Smith, 59, Hillcrest Road,
LaFayette, and Gordon Russell
Renshaw, 41, Hillcrest Drive,
LaFayette, reported Cpl. Jim
Spurgeon and Troopers Alvin
Phillips and K. W. Dyer.
Mr. Smith’s son, David J.
Smith, is a Summerville
resident.
DRIVER UNKNOWN
Corporal Spurgeon said
Wednesday morning that he
had been unable to determine
the driver of the vehicle. He
also said Sally Lewis, 30,
Hillcrest Drive, was injured in
the crash.
The vehicle in which all
three were riding attempted to
round a curve on Coffman
SFrings Road 1.8 miles south
of LaFayette, Spurgeon said.
It ran into a ditch on the op
posite side of the road, went
out of control and struck a tree,
overturned and came to rest
with the victims trapped
underneath, he said.
The victims were removed
by the Walker County Rescue
Service and Tri-County
Emergency Medical Service.
Alcohol was a contributing
factor to the fatal wreck, Cor
poral Spurgeon said.
ONE CAR
A Stevenson, Ala., man was
hurt in a one-car accident on
Highway 48 east of Menlo at
mid-afternoon Tuesday,
reported Trooper Mike King of
the Rome post of the Georgia
State Patrol.
He was identified as Billy
Ray Hendrix, 26, Stevenson.
Hendrix was later charged
with driving under the in
fluence (Dlfi) of intoxicants
and with being an habitual
violator.
Trooper King said Hendrix’
car was traveling east on
Highway 48 when it went out
of control in a slight curve,
traveled across the roadway,
hit a culvert and overturned
onto its top.
Hendrix was carried to
Chattooga County Hospital by
the Chattooga Emergency
Medical Service (EMS).
HAYWOOD VALLEY
One person was hurt in an
accident on Haywood Valley
Road shortly after the
Highway 48 mishap, King
reported. Injui ecY was
Christopher Cook, 29, Summer
ville Rte. 4. He was taken to
Floyd Medical Center by the
Chattooga EMS. e
Cook said he met a vehicle
on the wrong side of the road,
causinf; him to swerve, lose
control of his sports car and
smash into a tree, King
reported. Gregory Scott Ben
nett, 30, Summerville Rte. 4,
driver of the other vehicle,
denied that he was on the
wrong side of the road, Trooger
King said. It was not possible
to (fietermine if either vehicle
was on the wrong side of the
road, he added.
A child was injured in a
two-vehicle accident on Coun
ty Road 119 near County Road
127, northeast of Summerville
Monday afternoon, reported
Trooper King. She was iden
tifiecf) as Rebecca Cooper, 11,
205 Ellen St., Summerville.
Reports said a vehicle
driven by Deborah H. Van
Pelt, 37, 205 Ellen St., was in
volved in a collision with a
truck driven by William T.
McGuire, 22, Summerville Rte.
1. A wet, slick road was listed
as a contributing factor to the
accident.
Berryton
Fund-Raiser
A fellowship service will be
held Friday at the Berryton Bi
ble Mission. Gary Eastwood
will preach. There will be
speci£ singing. The service will
start at 7:30 p.m.
A hot dog and barbecue
supper will begin at 5:30 p.m.,
and all proceegs will go to the
church building fund. The
public is invited.

sioner that certain vehicles and other equipment
are beyond repair, we class these as junk and are
offering same to the public as junk, with no war
ranty of any description. Sale will be advertised
four consecutive weeks in the official legal organ
of Chattooga County, The Summerville News.
Sale will be held on the first Tuesday of
December, 1988, on the lot behind the Ambulance
Service, at 10:00 o’clock a.m. All bids will be made
on the lot as same as a Sheriff’s Sale. Each article
will be sold separately and will be sold “as is".
This notice and sale will be handled under the law
given by the County Commissioner’'s Handbook,
Carl Vinson Institute. Articles must be moved
within ten days and payment made before
removal.
This notice entered into the minutes of Chattooga
County on page number 215 of the Chattooga
County Commissioner’s Minute Book this 18th
day of October, 1988.

Lawmen Probe Area Thefts
The Chattooga County
Sheriff's Office is investigating
sevei:'al thefts during the past
week.
Sheriff Gary McConnell
said Inv. Larry Kellett told
him that Johnny Gilreath,
Summerville Rte. 3, reported
several thefts on his property
between Sept. 1 and Oct. 12.
Listed as missing were a
chain saw with 16-inch bar
weed trimmer, battery and
saber saw.
HANDBAG
A handbag containing some
SSO cash, credit -cards,
checkbook, keys, photo album
and medication was stolen
from the car of Glenda
Deßerry, 28 6th St., Trion, on
Sunday, reported Dep. Cindy
Teems. The vehicle was park
ed at the Trion football field at
the time, the report added.
A .30-.30 caliber rifle with
scolpe valued at $175 was
stolen Sunday night from a
vehicle arked outside
Palmer's Sgopette, Trion, the
deputy noted in another report
to Sheriff McConnell. The t?)eft
was reported by Foye Renfroe,
LaFayette Rte. 2, and the
firearm was owned by her
brother, Thomas Renfroe,
Trion Rte. 1, Deputy Teems
reported.
GUN STOLEN
A .410 gauge shotgun own
ed by Kathy Bruce, East
Seventh Avenue, Summerville,
was stolen from the home of
Ronald Bico between Oct. 9
and 12, the depouty continued.
Tires were slashed on a
truck owned by Johnny Lamar
Fowler, Summerville Rte. 4,
last Thursday, reported Dep.
Sgt. Dan Young. The vehic?e
was parked at Gore at the time.
A radio and two speakers were
also stolen, reports added.
Value of the damaged or stolen
items was listed at $5lO.
Dep. David Westbrooks in
vestigated a sls gasoline
driveoff from the Smile Conve
nience Store, U. S. 27, north of
Summerville, on Monday.
CHECKS TAKEN
Two Workmen's Compen
sation checks were stolen from
Karl B. Gregory, Trion, last
Friday, reported Chief Inv.
Ron '¥urner. They were later
cashed at a Summerville Bank.
Investigation into the incident

A 5-year-old child,
Stephanie Payton, Summer
ville Rte. 1, received injuries to
her left arm last Thursday,
reported Dep. LaDon Lively. A
neighbor’'s bulldog started
chasing a truck down the road,
the report stated, and it then
ran into the Payton yard and
attacked the c%ild. She was
taken to Chattooga County
Hospital for treatment.
A vehicle driven by Willie
Lee Deaver, 19, Menlo Rte. 1,
struck one of two horses in
Back Berryton Road last
Saturday, reported Dep. David
Westbrooks.
A deer was struck by a
pickup truck driven by Alfred
McDaniel, Lyerly Rte. 1, last
Friday, reported Deputy Live
ly. The incident occurred near

Two Chattooga women
were charged with first degree
forgery last Friday, the
sheriff’s office said. They were

Laney was released on $25,000
bond and Ms. Green was still
incarcerated in the Bartow
County Jail near noon

CHATTOOGA COUNTY,
It appearing to the Commissioner of Chattooga County, Georgia, that the
Board of Education of said County, at a meeting thereof on the 10th day of Oc
tober, 1988, has adopted a Resolution that the Commissioner of Chattooga Coun
ty be requested to make the following tax levies for the Chattooga County School
System for the year 1988 as follows:

Therefore, it is ordered that a county tax is hereby levied for the year 1988 on
all property in said County subject to taxation for school bond purposes at the rate
of .52 mills on the dollar of said taxable property, being a levy of $.52 on the One
Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) of said taxable property to pay said bond in
debtedness as same becomes due during 1988, and that a county tax, in addition
to that levied above, is hereby levied for the year 1988, on all of the property in
said County subject to taxation for general school purposes, at the rate of 7.25
mills on the dollar of said taxable property, being a levy of $7.25 on the One Thou
sand Dollars ($1,000.00) of the taxable property in Chattooga County, Georgia.
It further appearing to the Commissioner of Chattooga County, from said
General Tax Digest for the year 1988 that:
1. The net value of property in said County subject to taxation for county bond
purposes is the sum of $191,887,624.00.
2. It will require $135,190.00 to pay off all bonds issued by Chattooga County
and interest thereon due and to become due in the year 1988, and
3. A tax rate of .71 mills on the One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00) of property
subject to taxation for such purposes will provide said required amount.
Therefore, it is ordered that a county tax is levied for the year 1988 on all pro
perty in said County subject to taxation for bond purposes on the rate of .71 mills
on the dollar of said taxable property, being a levy of $0.71 on the One Thousand
Dollars ($1,000.00) of said taxable property to pay said bonded indebtedness as
same becomes due during 1988.
It further appearing to the Commissioner of Chattooga County, from said
General Tax Digest for the year 1988 that:
1. The net value of the property in said County, subject to taxation for general
county purposes in the incorporated areas of Chattooga County, Georgia, is
$73,188,526,00 and in the unincorporated areas of Chattooga County, Georgia, is
$110,768,591.00 after deducting homestead exemption.
2. It will require $2,209,883.00 to pay the éenerul liabilities and legally
authorized expenses of said County, due and to become due during 1988, ex
clusive of those taxes that have been levied hereinbefore.
3. A tax rate of 13.97 mills on the dollar of property subject to taxation in the
incorporated areas and a rate of 10.72 mills on the dollar of property subject to
taxation in the unincorporated areas will provide said required amount. The
rollback for property in the unincorporated areas required for the credit applied by
the Life Insurance Premium Tax shall be 3.25 mills, which provides for the reduc
tion to the 10.72 mills rate for the unincorporated areas from the 13.97 miils rate
for the incorporated areas.
Therefore, it is ordered that a county tax in addition to those levied above is
hereby levied for 1988 on all property in the unincorporated areas of Chattooga
County, subject to taxation for general purposes at the rate of 10.72 mills on the
dollar of taxable property, being a levy of $10.72 on the One Thousand Dollars
($1,000.00) of taxable property; on all property in the incorporated areas of Chat
tooga County, subject to taxation for general purposes at the rate of 13.97 mills on
the dollar of taxable property, being a levy of $13.97 on the One Thousand Dollars
($1,000.00) of said taxable property; all for the purposes defined in Article IX, Sec
tion IV, Paragraph 1 of the Constitution of Georgia 1982; O.C.G.A. 48-5-220, as
amended; and other appropriate provisions of Georgia law, other than those for
which a tax has been levied hereinbefore.
It is further ordered that One-Fourth (¥ th) mill tax upon all applicable property
in Chattooga County as provided by State law be levied in accordance therewith,
said amount to be transmitted by the Tax Commissioner of this County as by law
provided to the State of Georgia. :
It is further ordered that these orders and levies be spread upon the Minutes of
the Commissioner, posted and published as required by law, and that g copy of
same be transmitted to the Revenue Commissioner of the State of Georgia by the
Clerk of the Commissioner.
It is further ordered that all resolutions, orders and levies, if any conflict with
these orders and levies be, and the same are hereby repealed.
ADOPTED this 18th day of October, 1988, by the Commissioner of Chattooga
County, Georgia.
