Ali
With
Autumn has officially arriv
ed in Georgia — a season
especially attractive to those
interested in the great out
doors. The Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) this
week reminded Chattooga
Countians to watch for snakes
in the fall woods.
“‘During fall months,
snakes are searching
woodlands and other areas that
attract people, looking for a
place to spend the winter.
Those who plan to spend time
outdoors this fall, particularly
in Chattooga County's
woodlands, should be aware of
their increased chances of en
countering a snake,”’ says
DNR Wildlife Biologist Ron
Simpson.
According to Simpson,
most snakes tha[tni)eople hap
pen upon are harmless, but all
snakes should be left alone. “In
Georgia, approximately 38
non-poisonous and six
poisonous snakes occur, in
cluding the rare, deadly coral
snake,” he warns. ‘‘Of the few
people bitten each year by
poisonous snakes in Georgia,
most were attempting to catch
or kill the reptile.”
To avoid the possibility of
a poisonous snake bite, Simp
son advises, “Sim{)ly watch for
snakes. If you plan to be in
‘snake country,” wear heavy
shoes or boots. Heavy pants
hanging down over footwear
offer agded protection. Snake
leggings or boots are a good in
vestment for those planning to
spend a lot of time in Georgia’s
woodlands.”
Measures to keep snakes
from ‘‘settling in'’ around
homes during autumn and
winter include removing any
debris that would provide
snake cover such as limbs and
rock piles, trimming dense
shrubgery and cutting weedy
areas, Simpson suggests.
