Bulldogs Shut Down Bremen Behind
Strong Defense And Running Game
By JOHNNY BRIMER
Ball control on offense and
hand hitting on defense. These
two elements combined gave
the Trion Bulldogs an im
%ressive 12-0 victory at
remen last Friday night. The
Bulldogs got their third
straight roag win and also their
thirdg region win against one
loss.
Bremen won the toss and
deferred until the second half.
This was their first mistake.
Noble Duke kicked it deep to
David Peek. Peek returned it

41. Clark’s first down pass to
Chris Keen fell incomplete.
Bynum got nine on second
down. On third and one from
the Blue Devil 32, lightning
struck for the 'Dogs. Bynum
got the call, and, following
some good blocks, and some
fine individual effort,
negotiated the 32 ;i‘ards to
gaydirt. Shannon Tucker's
AT was wide left, but the
Bulldogs led 6-0 with 5:20 left
in the first quarter. This 12
play, 89 yard drive had coun
sumed six and a half minutes
of the first quarter.
Peek's kigkoff was returned
by Dukes 10 yards before Jim
bo Crabtree drilled him.
Bremen began from their own
15. Ed fexley, Bremen's
sophomore running back, car
ried five straight times. He
would wind up with 21 carries
good for 62 yards. Bexley's five
opening carries went this way:
Two yards with Tucker makinE
the ste(:;), seven yards as Pee
collared him, three yards and a
first down as Brandon Floyd
got him, First down at the 27
saw Bexley %‘:t onlg one as Jim
Brooks got help from Tucker
and Bynum to bring him down.
Bexley's string gl?ed as Floyd
stoEped him after a one yard
¥ic up. On third. and eight
rom the 29, QB Brett House
threw incomplete to Dukes to
end the short drive. John Stan
ford punted for 28 yards. The
'Dogs had the bafi’ again at
their own 43.
Clark got one on first down.
Montgomery reeled off 14 for
a first down on the next play.
Now at the Devil 42, Clark’s
{J&SS to Floyd misfired. Mon
gomery got the call on second
down and responded once
again with a 12 yard run good
for a first down at the Bremen
30. On first down, Maddux got
nothing as the quarter ended
with Trion leading 6-0 and on
the move again. o
The domination of Trion
was obvious as they had
outgained Bremen 116 yards to
only 14. The 'Dogs had run 17
plays to Bremen's six. The first
down edge was 6-1.
The second quarter began
with Trion facing first andg 10
at the Bremen 25 after a good
gain was nullified by a holding
Fenalty. Maddux got three on
irst down. Montgomery lost
one on second down, but gain
ed five on third down to set up
fourth and three at the Devil
18. Clark keEt but got only two
to thwart the drive.
Bremen took over at their
own 16. Scott Daniel stopped
Bexley after a two yard gain on
first down. BexYey carried
again on second down and pick
eg up four yards before Gable
dragged him down. On third
down, Matt Young got 13
before Gable got to him. This
was Bremen's only double
figure rush of the game.
With a first down at the 36,
Bremen appeared to think they
had sometgfng going. What a
silly idea that was. House lost
one on first down as Brooks
stopped him. Bexley met Floyd
after picking up four on second
down. House's third down pass
to Hendrix fell incomplete to
bring the Devils back to reali
ty. This time, Stanford's 34
yard punt was returned 12
yards by Floyd. After a 10
yard hol’(liing enalty against
them, the Bullgogs had theball
first and 20 at their own 29.
Maddux got six on first down.
After a second down incomple
tion, Clark got four on third
down to force a punt. Keen's 29
yard punt was returned six
yards by Bremen's Kendall
McClure before Floyd tackled
him. From the 29, Bexley got
five as Gable and Peek combin
ed on the stop. On second
down, he got 10 and a first
down before Bynum caught up
to him. On first down at the
BHS 44, Bexley ran for five
before Floyd got him. On se
cond down, Peek threw House
for a five yard loss. House
threw incomplete on third
down to end tfie possession. A
30 yard punt resulted in the
'Dogs being at their own 26.
Magdux gained eight as time
expired in the first half. Trion
le(f 6-0 on the scoreboard and
143 to 51 on the stat sheet.
Bremen showed some spark
to start the second half as
Dukes brought the kickoff
back 28 yards out to the
Devils' 45. Bexley got six on
first down before Bynum made
the play. This put Bremen in
Trion territory for the first
time all night. From the 49,
Bexley got three before Tucker

and Brooks stopped him. Bex
ley then got three more and a
first down as Bynum brought
him down. Now at the Bulldog
43, Bexley got three more
before Floyrf drogped him.
From the 40, number 23 got
five yards when Peek stopped
him. Bexley came back with a
one yard gain on third down as
Keen met him. Fourth and one
at the Trion 34, an errant pitch
was recovered by Trion's An
dy Pilgrim.
The 'Dogs’ offense began at
their own 40. Bynum carried
twice for six total yards.
Clark’s third down pass to
Keen went incomplete and
Trion punted. Keen's 34 yard
kick was returned two yar(fi: by
McClure, Floyd and Pilgrim
teamed up to get him.
From their own 23, the Blue
Devils appeared to still think
they couf:i run against the
Trion defense. Bexley got three
on first down when 'lyucker and
Keen got him. Floyd and Scott
Coley got him after a five yard
run on second down. Again,
Bexley run on third down,
gaining one yard before Tucker
made the stop.
After a 30 yard punt, Trion
began what would prove to be
a game clinching drive from
their own 38.
Clark started things off
right with a nine yar(f gain,
Another holding call pushed
the ball back to the 3& That
was no problem as Bynum pro
mptly got 12 yards for a tli)rst
down at the Trion 48. On first
down, Montgomery picked up
three. Maddux, who hadn’t car
ried in a while, got the call next
and ripped ofF 14 big yards.
Another penalty for holding
made it still t[zird down so
Bynum got nine to put Trion at
Bremen'’s 38 with a first down
as the third quarter ended.
Trion has owned the fourth
quarter all year and this game
proved to be no exception.
Clark opened with a seven
yvard gain. Maddux -carried
twice é)r five yards and first
down at the 26. Montgomery
fi)t nothing on first down.
addux came through again
with 14 yards and a first down
all the way to the 12 yardline.
Maddux got two on first down
this time. Clark lost three
yards and fumbled on second
down, but retained possession.
On third and 11 from the 13,
Clark hit Keen with an 11 yard
pass to bring up fourth and one
at the three. Bynum scored
from there to salt the game
away. This drive resembled the
first one as it was 62 yards on
14 plays and cheweg up ap
proximately seven minutes on
the clock. A two-point conver-‘
sion failed, but, with seven
minutes left, the Bulldogs had
things well in hand. Bremen's
offensive yardage at this point
read 74 total, so the chances of
them scoring twice in seven
minutes were slim and none.
Bremen now began to
throw. Starting at their own
38, House hit Hendrix for 12 to
the 40. From there, House hit
Parham for 17 more to the
Trion 43. House again dropped
back looking for Parham, Eut
was hit by Tucker as he threw.
DeWayne Crabtree intercepted
to give the 'Dogs the ball back
at their own 16.
Three runs, Montgomery
for three, Clark for one, and
Maddux for four brought up
fourth down. Keen's punt
brought out how important a
good kicking game is. The fine
senior punter boombed a
tremendous punt of 58 yards to
pin Bremen at their own 18.
The Blue Devils were now
throwing on almost every
down. House, already playing
on an ilgured ankle, took some
tremendous shots from Tucker,
Floyd, Brooks and Coley. Com
pletions of 12 and 14 yards
were sandwiched around their
incompletions and two runs,
glus a roughinfi call against the
ulldogs put the Blue Devils at
the Trion 45, only their second
trip across migfield in the
game. A nine yard completion
and an incomdpletion brought
u? fourth and one at the 36.
Floyd put a big exclamation
point on the game with a sack
of House. Time expired and the
Bulldogs had tgeir second
shutout in three games.
No one can remember a
Bremen team being dominated
this thoroughly as the perfect
mixture of ballycontrol offense
and super defense was
displayetf by Trion in this
game.

The rushing was led b
Bynum (10-86-2 scores), Macgi

Montgomery (8-41). Defensive
ly, Floyd, coming off a game at
eruchee that had earned him
defensive player of the week
honors by the Rome News-
Tribune, gave a repeat perfor
mance. The senior end s%owed
nine tackles, one assist, and
one and a half sacks. Tucker
and Bynum had five tackles
and one assist each. However,
the entire defensive unit
deserves credit for this one.
Bremen totaled 66 yards
rushing and 64 passing for the
game with all of the passin
yards coming in the fourtfi
quarter. g o
The two long touchdown
drives were produced through
hard work by a fine offensive
line of Pilgrim, Tucker, Brooks,
Stefan Hoglund, and Steve
Ewing. Goo%i work, gentlemen.
The win kept the Bulldogs
in the chase for a playoff spot.
At 3-1, they are tied with Cgat
tanooga Valley for the second
playoff spot behind Bowdon. A
win at Gordon Lee on Nov. 11
would put all the marbles on
the Valley game here in Trion
on the 18th. Let’s hope that
happens.
Tomorrow night, the
Bulldogs celebrate homecom
ing against the Lookout Valley
Ygllow Jackets from the Chat
tanooga area. Lookout Valley
is 6-3 and features a fine runn
ing back in Dusty Griffith.
They will be a formidable oppo
nent. The 'Dogs would like to
see a big crowd for their
homecoming game, so come on
out and enjoy the festivities.

The infamous Bremen scoreboard tells the happy story of
