Teachers Do Teach
Dear Editor: B
I hadn't originally planned to give the arti
cle, “Teachers Bon't¥l€ach.” in the Oct. 20 edi
,tion of The Summerville News, the dignity of
arebuttal. After giving the matter some serious
thought, however, I &cided the article was in
definite need of a reply.
I would like to make a few comments con
cerning elementary teachers today. Not only do
we teach reading, writing and arithmetic, we
also teach social studies, science, phonics, spell
ing, music, art, movement, health, library skills,
social skills, personal hggiene, moral values,
civi'g_resp_qns&ilit_ies and more. Al
The added work put on teachers today from
both the state and local governments includes
such things as tracking of each student’s pro
gress, extensive lesson plans, paperwork and
ocumentation in all areas of teaching.
Teachers work with students individually,
in small groups, as an entire class, with peer
teaching and in other ways. Methods use(f are
Headline Was Misleading
Dear Editor:
I'm writing about the article you wrote on
about the Oak View Nursing Home last week,
“Starved For Affection.”
I'm all for volunteers for the nursing home
and hospital. I did not like the title ams I sure
didn't li?(e the pictures.
Yes, there are a lot of people starved for af
fection everywhere.
But there are a lot of people in the nursing
home that are not. For example, the lady in the
Eicture, Mollie Beason, who is in the nursing
ome and has been for over 11 years, does not
starve for affection. She has a family that loves
and cares for her very deeply. They do all the
things she needs done sucg as writing her let
tersl,{ etc. And they visit her often during the
week.
Yes, there are people in the home that have
no families or they have families but they have
forgotten them; these are the people that need
love and affection.
People have friends in the home but just
don't visit them. Mollie had friends until she
got sick but where are they now? People just
seem to forget about people in nursing homes.
There are people in our county who have never
VAT Would Make Wealthy Pay
Dear Editor:
1f Congress does pass the value added tax
legislation you referred to in last week's Sum
merville News, at least the wealthy will be re
quired to pay some taxes.
Under the current system the wealthy and
large corporations pay little or no taxes while
families with incomes of less than $30,000 a
year are taxed much more heavily. They can
not benefit from the tax loop holes desifined for
the wealthy. If what you say is true, then rich
Flowers Stolen From Grave
Dear Editor:
This is a letter for whoever is stealing
flowers off graves at the Summerville
Cemetery.
We put flowers on Hoyt Teague's grave
because we love him and he was a very special

do, someone steals them off the grave.
We can’t imagine wh{ people would want

Vote For George Bush
Dear Editor:
We are rapidly approaching the hour of deci
sion concerning the coming election. Perhaps
you have alreafiy made up your mind. In case
you have not, I would Yike to share a few
thoughts. :
In the past few years, I have worked with
countless teens, most of whom were victims of
a liberal system devised, by the humanistic
ethic, which as slowly corroded the Judeo-
Christian values.
I am speaking specifically about prayer be
ing taken out of the schools and abortion be
ing made legal. I have seen the tragic aftermath
resulting from this growing liberalism in our
country. Young people, caught up in pressure
from their peers, are now sanctioned by law, to
do their own thing. It just doesn't work that
way — there is always a price to pay; an un
wanted pregnancy, an abortion with all the
psychological trauma, an interrupted education
often never regained, or becoming a victim of
Easy To Be A Christian
Dear Editor,
There are many people in this county who
feel that it is very important to be a Christian,
but who also seem to think that this is very
hard to do. I couldn’t blame anyone for not be
ing a Christian, if it was as hard as most peo
ple think it is.
But the Lord Jesus said that it was easy
(Matthew 11:28-30). I have a good time serv
ing Jesus. And if I can do it, anybody can do
it. Just follow these simple rules:
1. Don’t try to do it by vg)lépower — Never
strain yourself trying to be good. We aren’t sup
osed to do it in our own strength. Be humble,
fike a little child, and lean on Jesus for
everything. When you're tempted, and the
temptation seems too strong, simply pray a lit
tle prayer for help and lean on Jesus. Then
resist the temptation.
2. The first step is of course to be born again.
Confess your sins to God, and ask him to
forgive you in Jesus' name. Ask him to help you
forgive others, because he won't forgive your
sins if you hold grud%es. If you've stolen
anything, take it back. If you've hurt anyone,
apologize. Turn away from sin to God. Then,
and only then, you may be baptized in water.
You aren’t worthy of baptism, otherwise (Mat
thew 3:8).
Read the Bible every day, and if you don’t
understand something, mark it.
Keep praying for understanding and study
ing it, until you’re sure you understand what
the Bible is saying to you. Skip a few meals if
von have to.
a combination of auditory, visual, tactile and
kinesthetic. And let's not forget all of the ad
ditional time and effort put into our special
education students and their individual needs.
Teachers do teach. It takes the cooperation
and hard work of teachers, students and
parents for a successful school experience.
Parents who want their chiidren to succeed
gladly help them with homework and school
projects.
I am proud to be a teacher and help these
young people prepare for a world where more

ever been inside the nursing home much less

ing home shouldn'’t have to beg t}())r volunteers.
People in our county should be willing. Some
churches are very good about visiting and giv
ing little things to patients they need and can
use.
We are thankful for everything the nursing
home and the staff have done for our patients
and county. We are also thankful for every
visitor and anything anyone does. And I should
know about afi this because the lady in the pic
ture is my mother and we are very proud to say
she is in the Oak View Nursing Home. We love
her dearly. The article should have read, “‘Coun
ty Love Needed.”

For the family of Mollie Beason
Editor’s Note: There was no intent by The
News or Oak View Nursing Home to imply that
Mrs. Beason was one of the nursing home’s
residents who was ‘‘starved for love.” The on
ly intent of the article and accompanying pos
ed photograph was to illustrate an effort by the
hospital and nursing home to establisK an
organized volunteer program for both facilities.

the welfare system, where a girl is often en
couraged to become a prostitute, each child be

If that weren’t enough, it is reported that
in teen-age mothers, child abuse is up 500 per
cent. Does it seem logical in view of this crisis
alone to elect a man who endorses the pro
abortion stand and the anti-family stand of the
feminists!!!?
How we vote this year will make a crucial
difference as to the future of America. Let’s en
dorse a man that believes old-fashioned morali
ty, made America great to begin with, and
wants to return to the old paths of common
decency and democracy. Let's elect a qualified
man who first and foremost believes in the sanc

aman who didn’t? Let’s elect George Bush as
our next president.

It's okay to take a stand for God against
sin. But be polite and friendly to sinners and
don’t condemn them. The more harsh and
critical we are of others, the harder God will be
on us.
We might be tempted with the very thing
we criticized in others, when otherwise we
would not be tempted. Jesus called people
h:);poc;rites, fools and sons of snakes. (Matthew
23:33).
Jesus was God in human flesh — The Judge.
(John 1:1-14; Isaiah 9:6). oo
He was perfect, and had room to talk. John
the Baptist called some people sons of snakes
(Matthew 3:7). But John was a prophet, speak
ing a message direct from God. We must be
careful not to criticize under our own
inspiration!
If the Holy Spirit tells you to call someone
a snake, do it. But if you do it under your own
inspiration, you may be in big trouble.
Follow these simple directions one day at a
time, and you will be amazed at how easy it is
to be a happy victorious Child of God.

Left Game Too Early
Dear Editor:
I should have known better. They had never
let me down before. Behind six points late in
the third quarter, the Trion Bulldogs were scar
ing me to death. Armuchee has always been
hard to beat at home, but I thought that Trion
was about a two touchdown favorite before the
game.
My family and I left the Armuchee Stadium
late in the third quarter headed for West Rome.
After a small snack at Del Taco, we headed for
home. My son had the car radio on, and the an
nouncer said the score was 6-6 in double
overtime,
Armuchee never penetrated farther than
Trion’s 41-yardline. Trion Eenetrated deeper in
to Armuchee's territory, therefore they won by
penetration, 7-6. Stars for the Trion fiulldogs

Dear Editor: (
All of us know, “If you want to get

During the years I've known Martha

with the Chamber of gommerce as vice presi

raiser for the United Way Campaign, and as a
leading force to kee vocationa]ptraming in our

get things done. Martha also serves on the

ACLU Founded By Radiecals
Dear Editor:
Since presidential candidate Michael
Dukakis announced his affiliation with the
American Civil Liberties Union, a national
spotlight has been focused on that organization.
Stung by mounting public resentment of its
golicies, the Union has gone to the bench for
elp: the old Hollywood radical, Burt Lan
caster, has been taken from moth balls and
engaged to do a series of im_zfie-polishing com
mercials for ACLU. Gara LaMarche, executive
director of the Texas Chapter said recently,
“Our correspondents make clear that ACLU is
still the most hated organization in America.”
ACLU is becoming sensitive to charges that
it plays footsie with Communists. In the begin
ing, ACLU was officially cited as being Com
munistic and suversive, ¥>ut it manages to get
the citation lifted. Yet, even today, the liberal
media and their columnists remain on the defen
sive and gush like lottery winners with a litany
of éorgtitutional goodies that they attribute to
ACLU. '
I can't say whether or not ACLU is Com
munistic, but it invites a lot of them to parties.
Let’s have a look at the record.
ACLU was founded in 1920 by Roger Nash
Baldwin in company with such notagle Com
munists as Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Louis
Budenz and William Z. Foster, Baldwin, born
in Wellesley, Mass., on Jan. 21, 1884, later at
tended Harvard University where he earned an
M. A. in 1905. During World War I, he served
a year in jail for draft dodging —the liberals
describe him as a conscientious objector — after
his release, he became director of the ACLU.
During his life, Baldwin had so many affilia
tions with Communist fronts that it was almost
impossible to catalog them. A special report
prepared by the late House Committee on Un-
American Activities, in 1960, required five
pages to list them. It was estimate% that they
exceeded 200. In my own research material, I
stopped counting after 40.
In the Harvard Year Book, published in
1935 by the class of 1905, Baldwin made this
entry: “I have continued directing the un
popular fight for the rights of agitation, as
director of the ACLU, on the side engaged in
many efforts to air working class causes. I have
been in Europe several times, mostly in connec
tion with international radical activities, chiefly
against war, fascism, and imperialism — I am
for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for
abolishing the state itself as an instrument of
violence and compulsion. I seek social owner

In 1939, John Dos Passos, the great writer,
resigned from ACLU’s national committee
“because of Communist participation in the
Union’s affairs.”
After her death, the remains of Baldwin’s
associate, Communist Elizabeth Gurley Flynn,
were buried in the Kremlin wall — courtesy of
her friends in Moscow.
Predictably, Baldwin had high-placed
friends in the Democratic Party. On his 80th
birthday, then President Lyndon Johnson sent
the following message: “In your life you have
shown a devotion to principle and force of
character which will long be remembered by
your countrymen.” : }
So, ladies and gentlemen, your next presi

who told the ultraliberal magazine, ‘“Mother

The Michael Dukakis whose campaign
manager, Susan Estrich, is a long-time ACLU
member — having served as president of the
Massachusetts AéLU. and as a member of the
national board.
The same Mike whose transition team chief

nam, then wrangled a deferment from military

But all ofy these revelations haven't deter

Miller and Wyche Fowler from signing on with
Dukakis. Such is the progressive degeneration
of the National Democratic Party.
Because of criticism and pressure, ACLU
has decided to place on sale its Policy Guide,
containing 271 policies that describe the pur
poses and aims of ACLU. If you desire to use
ACLU'’s own printed words to wage war on its
