| read with amazement the paid ad written by Sonny Huggins and | am deeply saddened that
Sonny has cthosen to attack me with statements which totally misrepresent the truth. | had hoped
that Sonny would run his campaign based on his own accomplishments and voting record, but,
obviously, he is ashamed of this record, as he should be!
However, because his comments about me are totally misleading, | would appreciate the op
portunity of setting the record straight.
fi:?@ific-erganizatidns: o &
‘lt is tfue that | serve on the Board of Directors of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce (my
business is in Chatt.), but, apparently Sonny does not understand that the Rossville, Ga. Chamber
and the Chickamauga, Ga. Chamber (which | formed in 1982) are actually extensions of the
Chattanooga Chamber and | serve on the Board of Directors as the North Ga. representative.
My present community involvements in District 53 include: | am a soloist and member at the
Chatt. Valley Baptist Church, Past President PTO Chatt. Valley Elementary, Past President
Athletics Boosters Chatt. Valley High. | have served for the past 3 years on the Vocational Ad
visory Council for Walker County and was instrumental in the development of a dropout preven
tion program called VAP. | am the only parent to ever receive the “TEAM MOM™’ award from
the Chatt. Valley Wrestling Team. | serve on the Board of Directors for the National Arthritis
Foundation which serves North Ga., Board of Directors for the Vital Center (rehabilitation for
the blind) serving North Ga. and the North Ga. Coalition Against Pornography.
2. Hwy. 27:
| have taken a stand on Hwy. 27 and gave my stand to The Summerville News over two weeks
ago and expressed my stand to Sonny at the DOT meeting at the Recreation Hall last month.
3. State Parks: :
| am totally in favor of any funding which will help our State Parks. Sonny, your voting record
clearly shows that you have not supported State Parks in District 53, but have voted to support
a water slide in South Ga. (not North Ga.) appropriated $24 million for a motel at Stone Moun
tain (not Floyd State Park) and $64 million for Ga. Golf Courses. Are any of these golf courses
in North Ga.? | believe strongly that North Ga. should get its fair share of the money which
is appropriated in all areas and when elected | will fight for the people of District 53.
What | am opposed to is the funding of unnecessary projects such as the water slide in South
Ga. at the expense of our children’s education. We should fully fund quality basic education
before we build water slides. You have voted against this full funding and you voted against
the bill which would have given the middle school additional funding which was desperately
needed.
4. Appointment of Judges:
In 1984 the Judges for our district requested that the State Judicial Council approve a recom
mendation for a 4th Judge for Chattooga, Catoosa, Walker and Dade counties. These Judgeships
are determined based on population and caseload for the area. The Judicial Council did recom
mend 5 judgeships that year and we were 4th on the list. The only thing we had to do was
present a bill in the House and Senate as local legislation and the Judge was ours. Sonny Hug
gins killed this bill before it got to the Senate and the Judge we were to receive went to DeKalb
County who was sth on the list. This Judge, his secretary and an assistant DA paid for with
State money (our tax dollars) went to another county and we are paying for them to have this
Judge.
Accoding to Ga. rules when a Judgeship becomes vacant before the time has expired the Gover
nor makes the appointment to fill the unexpired time, then, the Judge must run for election
at the end of the term. | am opposed to total appointments of Judges, but that is just not the
way they are selected. Apparently, Sonny does not understand the process.
Anyone with questions concerning any issue or a question about me personally, | would welcome
the opportunity of talking to you. Please feel free to call me at home (404) 931-2738 or at work
(615) 266-0631.
