Turkey
Walk
Plans
The Chattooga County
Division of the American
Heart Assn. (AHA) will spon
sor its second ‘‘Great
American Turkey Walk'’ at 9
a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, begin
ning at WaKMart Shopping
Center.
During the Turkey Walk,
volunteers will solicit pledges
based on the number of miles
they walk. Spokesmen cited
the following walk benefits:
(1) The money raised sup
ports the AHA's research
public and professional educa
tion, and community service
programs.
(2) The 'l‘urkefi Walk pro
motes walking to help develop
and maintain cardiovascular
fitness.
(3) Turkeys, donated by
Red Food Store and Ingles, are
offered as incentives to walkers
who raise a specified amount of
money. Turkey is part of the
diet recommended by the
American Heart Assn. to help
control the risk factors of heart
disease.
“The Turkey Walk will help
the AHA spread the word that
walking can help people get
physically fit and condition
their heart and lungs. It's an
activity that the entire family
can enjoy,”’ said spokesman
Scott Tucker. “'lf you would
like to participate on Nov. 19,
you can help in one of two
ways.
‘(1) Be a walker. Collect
pledges and join in the six-mile
walk. The event, which lasts
about I'2 hours, stresses
fitness, not speed. Turkeys will
be awarded to those wfz’o col
lect SIOO or more. All walkers
that get pledges will receive a
"Turfiey Walk" hat and shoe
laces.
*(2) Support a walker by
pledging a donation to a
walker. You can help the
American Heart Association
fight heart disease and
strokes.”
For further information,
contact Tucker at 857-3431 or
734-7129.
