Yag Laser
°
Available
Laser angioplasty is now
available at Redmond Park
Hospital, according to Paul
Rutledge, hospital ad
ministrator. The Yag Laser,
which is used by vascular
surgeons to destroy plaque
that blocks arteries, is located
in the hospital's Surgery
Department.
“Laser surgery will mean a
shorter hospital stay and less
expense for the patient,” R. N.
Dale Carroll, director of Nurs
ing, explained. *‘Patients will
be able to return to work much
faster than if they had conven
tional surgery. In addition to a
shorter recovery time, patients
will also experience less pain.™
According to Dr. John
Kirkland, a board-certified
vascular surgeon, who has us
ed the equipment: ‘‘The laser
works by directing laser light
into a fiberoptic cable that
heats a metal tip to 400
degrees centigrade. The hot
metal tip destroys the blockage
by causing the cells that it
touches to absorb the intense
light and heat up, thereby los
ing their moisture and
disintegrating. Nearby cells are
left unharmed.
