of five Americans can’t read
well enough to read the instruc
tions on a medicine bottle, and
that more than one million
Georgians have never finished
high school. These Georgia
residents are not eligible for the
many jobs advertised for ‘‘high
school graduates only."”
Approximatel 5,000
adults in Georgia ¥lave taken
advantage of this second
chance at a high school
diploma. The TV lessons have
been an opportunity for the
near-ready GED student, who,
because of work schedules,
transportation problems, han

or other reasons, has been
unable to attend conventional
adult education programs.

special trips from Euroiean

an American bulldog puppy,”

County Water Receives OK
Customers of the Chat
too%a County Water District 1
no longer have to boil their
water to make it potable. Lance
Stowe, superintendent of the
water district, said that
samples sent to the state last
week tested negative for harm
ful bacteria.
Two weeks ago, a fire plug
on one of the water district's
lines was knocked down, rain
water entered the line and sup
posedly contaminated the
water supply, Stowe said. But
he reported that many of the
district's customers refused to
boil the water before using it
for drinking, and there were no
reports of serious intestinal
disorders or diarrhea.
“If the water had been as
bad as the state said it was,
there would have been reports
of diarrhea,”” Stowe said. *‘The
state said they couldn't have
made a mistake in testing."
