Necessary Nutrients
There are approximately 50 different nu
trients which are considered essential to
good health. These are involved in a
variety of complex biochemical processes.
The most well-known categories of nutri
ents are vitamins and minerals.
Vitamins are noncaloric organic com
pounds that are needed in small quantities
by the body for normal growth and main
tenance of health. Since vitamins are not
made by the body, they must either be
supplied in the diet or taken as supple
ments. As “cell helpers,” vitamins assist
in energy production, metabolism, and
new bone and tissue development.
Minerals are inorganic nutrients which
affect a large number of body functions
including the conduction of nerve inpulses
and the contraction of muscles. It is cur- ,
rently believed that 15 to 20 different
minerals are essential to good health. W
