DEAR DIALOGUE: What would we do without wonder
drugs? | think some of these new cures make the common,
old-fashioned three-day cold last three weeks!
Mel T., Madison, Wis.
DEAR MEL: You jest. Or do you? Truth is, there is no
cure yet for the common cold. And like you, some experts ques
tion the public health value of medications which alleviate cold
symptoms, and keep cold sufferers walking around, to pass
along their cold germs. In his book, **Cold Cures,” (Ballentine),
Michael Castleman states that at least two main means of
transmission are suspected: inhaling germ-loaded sneeze
droplets in the air; and touching contaminated objects.
Children are notorious carriers of colds-causing rhinovirus. To
defeat “‘hand-to-mouth’ infection, Castleman tells his own
voung son to wash his hands “like Lady Macbeth.”
Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, if you recall, scrubbed and
scrubbed her hands, crying, **Will not all Neptune's ocean
wash this blood clean from my hand?"" So, wusfi. wash, wash
your hands and avoid germ transmission.

DEAR DIALOGUE: When the Republic of China first
opened its doors somewhat to the West a decade ago, there
seemed to be a rush of interest in acupuncture. I don’t hear
much about it anymore. Has this Chinese treatment of
ailments with needles fallen out of favor?
Wilber M., Pasco, Fla.
DEAR WILBUR: No, says Robert Duggan of the Tradi
tional Acupuncture Institute in Columbia, Md. The ancient
Chinese practice involving pins and needles now is legally
recognized in 30 states, with more than 5.000 qualified
practitioners.

DEAR DIALOGUE: A stroke suffered by our Dad has left
him in need of nursing home care, and I'm wondering how to
go about selecting a place where he will be happy.
Laura C., Goldsboro, NC
DEAR LAURA: Shop around. Check them out. There can
be quite a range in quality of facility and care. You can get
a helpful free publication. “Thinking About a Nursing Home,"
by sending a self-addressed stamped business-size envelope
to the American Health Care Assn., 1201 L. Street NW,
Washington, DC 20005.

DEAR DIALOGUE: I used to hear a lot about Reye syn
drome, a disorder of the central nervous system among
children. But not much lately. Has Reye syndrome gone away?
Amanda V., Toledo, Ohio
DEAR AMANDA: Not entirely. But incidence of this
sometimes fatal childhood illness has dropped dramatically
over the past decade. In 1980, there were 8.8 cases of Reye
syndrome for every million American children. By 1985, the
number of afflicted fell to 1.5 cases per million children. Symp
toms are nausea, lethargy and disorientation. An editorial in
the Journal of the American Medical Association cites two
reasons: Reye syndrome was linked to aspirin; and parents
were warned about giving aspirin to their children without
a doctor's approval. In fact, the warning now appears on
aspirin medications. ;

How To Channel Stress
What do getting married, driving in
busy traffic, receiving a promotion and
meeting a deadline have in common?
They all cause stress.
“*Although your mind distinguishes bet
ween ‘good’ and ‘bad’ stress, your body
doesn't. It responds the same way whether
the stress is positive or negative,” says
Susan Jenkins, a community development
specialist with The University of Georgia
Extension Service.
PRESSURE
Stress, she explains, is pressure from
the outside that affects you on the inside.
Your body then prepares to fight the threat
or run away from it —the *‘fight or flight”
response.
‘“This system worked well for
prehistoric people who were often threaten
ed by animals and bad weather. Today, our
dangers tend to be things such as
deaglines. boredom and arguments,’’ she
says. ‘The body can't physically fight
boredom or physically run away from a
deadline; but it is ‘charged up’ with no way
to channel all that energy.
ILLNESS
This inability to release extra ener
can eventually aggravate stress-relatedgifi
Inesses — colds, chronic back pain, tension
headaches, ulcers, arthritis, heart attacks
and cancer.
Jenkins adds that the common signs of

SUess are irritabilitg'. anxiety and a change
in sleep patterns. “Other people may clench
their hands, grit their teeth or constantly
clear their throat,”” she says. “‘Different
eople have different warning signals.
Rearn what yours are and when you notice
them, act to relieve your tensions.”
TIPS
In her stress workshops she suggests
the following guidelines to help combat
stress.
* Follow a daily routine of periodic and
complete separation from your work. Take
advantage of coffee breaks and lunch.
* Check your physical environment for
irritations. Ventilation, heating, lighting
and noise levels are common sources of
stress.
*Talk with a friend, counselor or
minister. Verbalizing problems broadens
your perspective and unclutters the mind.
DIET
* Maintain a proper diet, exercise and
slee})inglhabits to prevent ups and downs.
Delegate authority. Stress often
results when you try to work beyond your
capacity. Know when to say no. Don’t at
tempt too much.
* Manage your time. Plan for change.
?hange is more easily met if you are ready
or it.
“If you're going to live a healthy life,
you have to learn to handle stress,”
Jenkins says.
