Herbert Christensen, 33, Rome, escaped
injury last Thursday morning, March 23,
when his truck skidded off U. S. Highway
27 at Trion and struck a ditch, causing it
to jackknife, said Trooper Eddie Lumsden
of the Georgia State Patrol. Reports said

GAE School Bells
The Summerville News has again been judged a win
ner in the Georgia Association of Fducators” annual School
Bell contest.
It won three top awards in 1988 for its editorials, news
series and year-round education coverage
This year, it won the coveted School Bell awards for its
editorials, news series, and staff writer Rich Jetferson won
the top prize for educational features,
Last year marked the first time that one weekly
newspaper had ever won three School Bell awards in one
year. 'l‘E:u distinction was repeated again this year,
WGTA radio in Summerville also won a School Bell
award for public service.
They will be presented during a hanquet on the even
ing of April 6 in Atlanta.
Theft Charged
To Trion Woman
A Trion woman has been
charged with theft by taking in
connection with the removal of
items from the home of a Sum
merville woman last Saturday
morning.

Summerville Police Depart
ment said a number of items
were reported missing from the
home of Hilda Hughes, 303
Ramey St., Summerville,
following a visit by Ms. Little
early Saturday morning.
Listed as missing were two
watches valued at S2OO, a
hand-carved duck valued at
$125, a sweater valued at $25,
makeup valued at SSO and per
fume valued at $75.
WHISKEY
A Summerville man was
charged on Good Friday with
possessing non-tax-paid
whiskey. He was identified as
John H. Anthony, 62, Seventh
Avenue.

Eddie Colbert and Lt. Houston
London said they found a par
tially filled gallon jug contain
ing “white whiskey" at An
thony's home during a raid
about 6:30 p.m. Friday. He was
released on $1.200 bond.
A Summerville man was
charged with disorderly con
duct and resisting arrest
following a domestic incident
at Dowdy Trailer Park Easter
Sunday evening, according to
officers Colbert and Patterson.
He was identified as
Christopher Scott Green, 28,
Summerville Rte. 4. Green was
released on bond after the inci
dent at the mobile home park
and then at police head
quarters afterwards, reports
showed.
CHASE
A Summerville man was
also arrested on traffic charges
after a brief chase Sunday, said
Sgt. Charles Owens and officer
Grady Allen. He was identified
as Jimmy A. Trammell, 20,
Summerville Rte. 5. He was

High principal Jack Catrett
was vandabzed at the high
school between 9:30 and 10
p.m. Friday, according to of
ficer Colbert. Someone had
broken bottles on the side of
the car and scratched the side
of the vehicle, reports in
dicated. Catrett couldn’t be
contacted at the time, Colbert
reported.
GAS DRIVE-OFF
Officer Colbert also in
vestigated a S2O gasoline drive
off at the Golden Gallon conve
nience store on Highway 114
Friday. Father of the person
driving the vehicle later return
ed and made the driver pay for
part of the gasoline and pro
mised to return later to pay the
remainder, the report said.

also investigated at the same
store about 12:30 p.m. Friday,

Officer Lydia Robertson
reported that someone broke
into the city dog pound on the

Two Chattooga County
men were charged with
disorderly conduct by Sum
merville police last Friday
afternoon in connection with
an incident on the loof of the
H&R Block building, Com
merce Street, Summerville.
They were identified as Larry
Montag Choate, 19, and Ran
dv L. Hines, 20. both of Sum
merville Rte. 1. They were ar
rested by officers Colbert and
Patterson.

Voter List

Purging Set
Some 1,500 voters will
be removed from the
voting list in Chattooga
County if they don’t renew
their registration by 5 p.m.
Friday.
Notification was sent
to 1.557 voters before
March 1 that they were in
danger of being removed
from the voter list in the
county. All voters who
have not cast ballots in at
least one election during
the past three years will be
purged from the list after
Friday.
Voters unsure about
whether they are still
listed as voters may con
tact the registrar’s office
at 857-1555.

BIDS OPENED FOR INDUSTRIAL PARK WATER LINE EXTENSION

City Water Line Bid OK
An apparent low bid for in
stalling a 12-inch water main to
Summerville's industrial park
came well within estimates last
week, according to the engineer
for the project.
Stancil’'s Underground
Trenching, Jasper, Ga., sub
mitted a proposal of $250,970.
Ron Harris, an engineer with
Welker and Associates, Mariet
ta. said his original estimate
for the project was $251,000.
BUILDING
Bids are also scheduled to
be opened at 2 p.m. next
Wednesday on mod}i)fying and
expanding the existing
speculative building in the in
dustrial park. The Summerville
City Council is expected to
take action on bids for both
projects at its 7 p.m. Monday,
April 10. meeting. -
Both the water line and
building work are planned for
Image Carpet Inc., which plans
to open a new facility in tfie in
dustrial park by late fall. It will
su%plv some 60 to 70 medium
to high-skill jobs. Applications
for those jobs will be received
by Image and the Georgia
Department of Labor on April
17, 18 and 20 at Summerville
City Hall.
