Cash, Drugs Seized In Two Raids
Sheriff’s Office Raids Two Houses; Seizes SIO,OOO, Suspected ‘Pot’
Raids by the Chattooga
County Sheriff's Office Friday
and Saturday resulted in the
arrest of three people on drug
charges and the seizure of more
than SIO,OOO cash and a quan
tity of suspected drugs.
Sheriff Gary McConnell
said two people were arrested
at 4:50 p.m. Saturday on Ball
Park Road, Lyerly Rte. 1. They
were identified as Cora Morgan
or Cora Morgan Finley, 59, and
Earl Finley. 54, both of Lyerly
Rte. 1. They were charged with
felony possession of marijuana
for resale.
Ms. Morgan or Finley was
released on $25,000 bond while
[oarl Finley was released on
$20.000 bond.
BAGS OF CASH
Sherift McConnell said the
raid resulted in the seizure of
11 bags of suspected marijuana
from a back bedroom, along
with a bag of currency. A bag
of currency was also found in
a front bedroom, the county's
top lawman said.

SMS Science Winners
A later strip search of the
woman at the jail resulted in
the discovery of $1,540.15, he
said.
A total of $10,030.15 was
seized and placed in a safety
deposit box at Farmers and
Merchants Bank pending
resolution of the case, the
sheriff said. The suspected
drugs were sent to the State
Crime Laboratory.
Participating in the raid
were Chief Inv. Ron Turner,
Invs. Greg Latta and Larry
Kellett ang Deps. LaDon Live
ly, Bill Blackwell, West Starr
and Joey Norton, the sheriff
said.
CLOUDLAND
Another raid at 9:30 p.m.
Friday resulted in the arrest of
Michael Steven McGill, 25,
Cloudland, on felony charges of
violating the GCSA. He re
mained in jail at mid-morning
Wednesday.
Sheriff McConnell said his
department raided McGill's
residence and seized a set of

A Trion man was also
charged with a felony violation
of GCSA following a traffic ac
cident on Spring Creek Road at
12:51 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff
said.
Larry James Mayes, 18,
Trion, was also charged with
driving under the influence of
intoxicants, obstruction of of
ficers and being under 21 and
in possession of alcohol. He
was released on bonds totaling
$20,000.
CAR IN CREEK
Sheriff McConnell said Dep.
David Westbrooks received a
call to a wreck on Spring Creek
Road and on arrival f%und a
1981 model car in the creek.
Deputy Parker and Trooper
Caron Pace of the Georgia
State Patrol arrived at the
scene a short time later,
reports said.
The lawmen said Mayes
was allegedly physically
violent and had to be restrain
ed. A search of Mayes turned
up a plastic bag containing a
white powder suspected of be
ing cocaine, the sheriff said.
A Trion man was also
charged at 4:38 a.m. Saturday
with a misdemeanor violation
of the GCSA, the sheriff said.
He was identified as James
Alvin Smith Jr., 33, 1206
Dickeyville Rd., Trion. He was
released on SSOO bond.
Reports said Smith obtain
ed a consent search of Smith
while he was a passenger in a
1985 model car. The search
turned up a plastic bag of
sus;{(ected marijuana and a
pack of rolling papers,
Westbrooks reported.
THEFT
Meanwhile, Sheriff McCon
nell said he and Investigator
Latta are probing the theft of
$275 from the home of 75-year
old Rachel Lloyd, Summerville
Rte. 2, between March 19 and
21
A thief entered the home of
Hoyt Tucker, Summerville
Rte. 1, Sunday and took a .16
gauge shotgun, a .22 caliber ri
fle and a .410 gauge shotgun,
reported the sheriff's office.
The guns were valued at $lB5.
Vandals cut down 200 feet
of fence and removed six metal
?osts at the farm of Carl San
ord, Holland-Chattoogaville
Road, last Thursday night or
Friday morning, according to a
re;fi)rt filed by Dep. Sgt. P. R.
Hill.
Someone fired two shots
from a high caliber weapon in
to the home of William gryan.
210 Mathis Dr., on Tuesday,
according to a report filed by
Deputy Westbrooks. The inci
dent occurred about 3 a.m.
A thief took the mailbox of
Larry Wells, Summerville Rte.
5, on March 22 or 23, reported

dal also damaged a mailbox in
the Wayside community Fri
day night or Saturday morn
ing, said Dep. Lisa Davenport.
ARRESTS
Among arrests made by the
sheriff's office last week were
the following:
— Jerome Ladell Evans, 22,
Summerville Rte. 1, was charg
ed Wednesday with a misde
meanor violation of the GCSA,
driving under the influence of
intoxicants and not having his
driver’s license on his person.
He was released on bonds
totaling $2,000.
— Joyce Foster, 33, 8 Fair
way Dr., Summerville, was
charged with theft by taking
Tuesday and released on SSOO
bond.

was charged with two counts of
writing a bad check and releas
ed on bonds of $1,200.
