Pension Tax Refund
Form Now Available
Federal retirees in Chattooga County could lose a possi
ble refund on their 1985 state income taxes if they don't
file the fproper form by Monday, April 17.
The forms (500 X are availabf; exclusively in Chattooga
at offices of The Summerville News, Rome Boulevard,
Summerville.
The U.S. Supreme Court decided a Michigan case
recently, ruling that state and local government pensioners
can't be taxed more favorably than %ederal pensioners, said
Charles Hendry, president of the Georgia Society of Cer
tified Public Accountants.
As of last Friday, Hendry said, the Georgia Department.
of Revenue had not reached a decision on how it would react
to the decision. The state must decide whether to exempt
federal retirees from the state tax or start taxing state
pensioners.
Hendry said federal etirees should file an amended
state return by April 17, seeking a refund of any state tax
they paid in 1985. Under Georgia law, such amendments
must be filed within three years.
