Beethoven
Concert On
Saturday
The Rome Symphony Or
chestra, the Rome gymphony
Chorus and the Berry College
Concert Choir will present ““An
Evening With Beethoven' at 8
p.m. Saturday at the Rome Ci
ty Auditorium.
The program will consist of
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9
in D Minor, Op. 125. The most
unusual aspect of this sym
phony is the choral finale in the
fourth movement. It is unusual
because of its unprecedented
use of a large chorus and vocal
soloists. It includes passages of
excgi)tionally high pitch and
tonal pitfalls for the singers,
sections which are dreaded by
choirs and soloists.
Tickets will be available at
the door, $8 for adults and $4
for students. For arrangements
for handicapped persons, call
291-79617.

DEAR DIALOGUE: Some athletes seem almost godlike
with their talent — such as my idol, Magic Johnson of basket
ball’s champion Lakers. Aren’t some people simply born with
superpowers?
Whit 0., San Bernardino, Calif.
DEAR WHIT: No doubt about it, some people are born
with superior athletic gifts. But insiders say that nobody
trains harder or plays mentally tougher than Earvin Johnson
Jr. Magic himsei)f says his inspiration was his father, who in
Lansing, Mich., for years worked two full time shifts to sup
port seven children. Magic is n;ade vx;ith talent plus hard worK.
*
DEAR DIALOGUE: Those dire predictions about highway
slaughter at 65 mph didn’t come true, did they?
Joe F., Payson, Ariz.
DEAR JOE: Alas, they did. According to the Department
of Transportation, the number of fatalities on rural interstate
highways 6jumped 20 percent in the states that raised speed
limits to 65 mph.
