escaped injury Friday when his
vehicle rolied down a steep em

l.ookout Mountain.
Two Rome men were hurt in
a truck accident shortly after
10 a.m. Monday, according to
Trooper Bill DeHart. q‘he

south of Rome.
Injured were Richard D.

DOWN MOUNTAIN
Trooper DeHart said
Padgett told him that he was
driving his pickup truck north
on Litfie Sand Mountain Road
and started down the mountain
when the wreck occurred. The
vehicle's brakes locked and ef
forts to steer it away from the
side of the mountain failed,
DeHart said Padgett told him.
It plunged off the side of the
mountain and overturned on
its top, coming to a rest
against trees some 40 feet from
the edge of the roadway,
DeHart said.
Five people were hurt in a
two-car accident on County

Jones car struck the Walker
vehicle, reports added, and
traveled into the yard of a
private residence. The Jones
vehicle came to a rest and then
rolled backwards 45 feet before
striking a residence, DeHart
continued.
One person was hurt in a
motorcycle accident on U. S. 27
about 250 feet north of Sum
merville at 6 p.m. last Satur
day, said Trootper Doug Jones.
He was identified as Terry Lee
Shropshire, 28, LaFayette.

Trooper DeHart said the

ESCAPES INJURY
A Pensacola, Fla. truck
driver, George R. Purvis, 25,
escaped injury in an accident
on Highway 48 near Lookout
Mountain at 12:40 p.m. last
Friday. Trooper DeHart said
Purvis told him that the
truck's brakes were burned out
traveling east down the moun
tain. The veh:cle had come to
a rest traveling up Shinbone
Ridge but before Purvis could
get it in an extra low gear, the
truck began rolling backward
down Highway 48, DeHart
said he was told. Purvis said he
applied the truck's brakes but
they failed to hold. The trailer
overturned, dumping tons of
ammonium nitrate onto the
embankment. The tractor was
still attached to the trailer and
it didn't overturn, reports
indicated.
Traffic was blocked on
