Summerville Man Trains
Spec. Joseph P. Plant immerses himself in a book bet

at Fort Irwin, Calif. The Summerville soldier is a
member of Bravo Company, 108th Armor Battalion,
48th Mechanized Infantry Brigade. The Georgia Na
tional Guard brigade is training at Fort Irwin until

Cpl. Wood Serves
In Middle East
Cpl. Rodney A. Wood, Sum
merville, is serving with the
U. S. Marine Corps in Opera
tion Desert Storm. He is the
son of the late J. R. Wood and
the late Charlotte Wood, and
the brother of Nena Morris,
Summerville. He has one
nephew, Jamey Johnson,
Summerville. e
Wood is a machine gunner
with the 2nd Marines Weapons
Division. His ;lwlatoon was the
first U. S. military troop to
enter Kuwait behind Saudi
trool’?s.
e f'oined the Marines in
May, 1987, and trained at
Camp Pendleton, Ca. He com
pleted a Terrorism Counterac
tion Course at the Marine
Corps. Institute in
Washington, D. C.
Wood received commenda
tion for self-initiative and
dedication to duty while serv
ing at Guantanamo Bay in
Cuba in 1988. In 1989-90, he
completed a Mediterranean
tour aboard the Iwo Jima, in
(S}pain, Italy and the Persian
ulf.
He was due for discharge
this month, but will continue
serving due to the Gulf War.
