Many utility lines are underground, out of the way and out of sight. There
may be one just where you are planning to dig that sewer, that foundation
or that well. If you hit and damage underground lines everybody loses. Your
job gets held up. We have to make repairs. People are deprived of some ser
vice - and they get mad at both of us. It is so easy to avoid this kind of trou
ble. We will have the location checked in a jiffy and let you know where the
cables are.
OSHA Law Section 1926.651 states: “Specific excavation requirements
prior to opening an excavation effort shall be made to determine whether
underground installations, ie., sewer, telephone, water, fuel, electric lines,
etc. will be encountered and, if so,where such underground installations
are located. When the excavation approaches the estimated location of
such an installation, the exact location shall be determined, and when it is
uncovered, proper supports shall be provided for the existing installation.
Utility companies shall be contacted and advised of proposed work prior to
the start pf actual excavation.”
