Marlin Powney
Marlin A. Downey, 61,
Ellen St., Summerville, died
Friday morning in the Red
mond Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Cherokee
County, Ala., on July 29, 1929,
son of the late Robert Lee and
Nobie Ovel Bedwell Downey.
Mr. Downey was a member of
the Perennial Springs Baptist
Church. 2 e
Surviving are his widow,
Nancy Smigi Downey, Sum
merville; one daughter, Pam
Martin; five sons, Jeffery
Downey, Bobby Downey, Todd
Downey, Ricky Downey and
Johnny Downey, Atlanta; one
sister, Estelle Burton, Rome;
one half-brother, Jehue
Williams, Rome; nine grand
children; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held
at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hill
Chapel of Lane Funeral Home
with the Rev. Gerald Harper
officiating. Interment was in
Perennial Springs Cemetery.

Pauline Mooney
Mrs. Pauline Espy M ’
83, Redmond Circle, Rome,
died Friday in a Rome nursing
home.
Mrs. Mooney was born in
Chattooga County on Feb. 17,
1908, daughter of the late
Oscar Joseph and lowa
Parham EsFy. She was retired
from the Floyd County Board
of Commissioner’s office. Her
husband, John Thomas
Mooney; former husband, Leon
Gamble; and a son, Leon Gam
ble Jr. died earlier.

Carrie B. Freeman, Summer

eight grandchildren; five great
grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Graveside services were
held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday with
the Rev. Linda Woodard of
ficiating. Interment was in
Summerville Cemetery. In lieu
of flowers, the family sug
gested that contributions be
made to the Silver Creek
Presbyterian Church, Lindale.

he was born in Dyersburg,
Tenn., on Feb. 5, 191%,
daulfhter of the late W. R. and
Idell Plummer Blackwell. Mrs.
Rains was a retired retail sales
clerk and a member of Sum
merville First United
Methodist Church. Her hus
band, Clifford Rains, died on
Sept. 24, 1983.
Surviving are one son, Jim
my Rains, Trion; two sisters,
Lura Locklear and Jo Ann Ox
ford, Dalton; one brother,
Charles Blackwell, Clarksville,
Tenn.; two grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services wlfl be held
at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Hill
Chapel of Lane Funeral Home
with the Rev. Mike Cavin of
ficiating. Interment will be in
Greenhills Memory Gardens.

assemble at the ¥uneral home

Lyerly
Awaits Final
Well Tests
The city of Lyerly may
know within the next few
weeks if it will be able to use its
i)_[r_ospective well site on
ighway 114. Mayor Danny
Wyatt told the Lyerly Cit
Council on Tuesday that worlz
has been completeg at the site,
and the project is waiting on
state tests to be conducted.
Results may be available
within a month after the tests
are completed. The site is
located just inside the city
limits.
Wyatt added that drilling
has not started on a second site
located on Lick Skillet Road,
because the ground has been
too wet.
In another matter, the
council adopted an ordinance
from the Department of
Natural Resources requirin
that new and renovateg
residential buildings be install
ed with low-flow pumping
fixtures.

The Retail Council of the
Chattooga County Chamber of
Commerce postponed its
regular meeting this week.

Sheriff Probes Unusual Injury
A Chattooga County man
was reported in ‘‘serious’’ con
dition in the intensive care unit
of Floyd Medical Center in
Rome Wednesday morning. An
investigation was continuing
into how he received massive
head injuries Saturday night.
