Marty Jackson resigned
this week as athletic director
and head football coach at
Chattooga High School, and
two assistant football coaches
also resigned. Sufirintendent
Don Hayes said that Principal
Rodney Allred will begin seek
ing candidates for what will be
the school’s sixth head football
coach in three years.

tinued for this term of court
but the voluntary
manslaughter trial of a Ber
ayton man began late Wednes
ay morning.

defense attorney.
Lawson’s case had been
postponed from last week un
til this week to allow time for
a psychiatric examination of
the former police captain.

Fiery Collision Takes Life Of Gaylesville, Ala. Man
Alabama Man Dies In Fiery Crash
Summerville Resident Killed In Carroll County Construction Accident
A Gaglwville, Ala. man
became Chattooga County’s
first traffic fatality of the year
this l?aSt weekend in a flaming
crash involving a tractor-trailer
truck. e
A Chattooga man also died
in a construction accident in
Carroll County late last week.
Jerry E. Jackson, 25,
Gaylesville, Ala. Rte. 2, died in
a collision between his 1986
model car and a tractor-trailer
truck Sunday. :
He was the first motorist to
be killed in a traffic accident in
the county this year.
Trooper David Wilson of
the Georfiia State Patrol said
the wreck occurred 2.9 miles
south of Summerville on
Highway 100 at 12:45 a.m.
Sunday. It was reported by
Debbie Reynolds.

Chattooga County’s voters
turned out at the poills Tuesday
to give political and law en
forcement newcomer Ralph
Kellett a resounding 58.6 ger
cent victory in what had
wrongly been expected to be a
tight race for sheriff.
He defeated former sheriff’s
department investigator Larry
Kellett to earn the county’s to

TRAPPED
Jackson's body was trap
ped in the burning wreckage,
which had been crushed by the
tractor-trailer truck. The fire
was extin%j.lished by the Sum
merville, Lyerly and Holland
Fire Departments. The Chat
tooga County Rescue Squad
also responded to the crash.
Firemen and rescue s%uad
members were concerned about
contents of the Fleet tanker
truck exploding or catching
fire. Fire reports indicated that
the tank contained a flam
mable but non-explosive cor
rosive alkaline substance.
However, it did not ignite.
Trooper Wilson said
Jackson's vehicle was traveling
north on Highway 100 while
the tanker truck driven by

Ralph Kellett was expected
to be sworn in as sheriff this
morning by Chattooga County
Probate Judge Jon Payne. The
probate judge, whois also elec
tion superintendent, said Tues
day night that he would
“walk’” the final results
through the office of Georgia
Secretary of State in Atlanta
on Wednesday for certification
so the new sheriff could be
sworn in as soon as possible..

Ralph Kellett will succeed
interim Sheriff Ron Turner,

Brophy said the north
bound Jackson car was in his
southbound lane, according to
Wilson’s report. When Brophy
swerved in an effort to avoid
the oncoming Jackson car, the
report continued, the Jackson
car tried to turn back into the
northbound lane but crashed
into the swerving truck.
" The vehicles ignited within
seconds. , :
Funeral services for
Jackson were held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday in the Hill Chapel of
Lane Funeral Home, Summer
ville. Interment was in Ami
Cemetery near Menlo.

seemed to stun him on election

Front Of Car Crushed In Flaming Accident Sunday

day afternoon.
The Carroll County
Sheriff's Office said Brown was
a foreman for Sun Belt Struc
tures, which was building a
bridge on Reevesville Road
over the Little Tallapoosa
River near Bowden.
Brown looked into a hole or
trench and his head became
caught between a steel struc
ture and a truck shovel bucket,
the sheriff’s office said. The ac
cident occurred at 1 p.m. and
Brown was pronounced dead at
Tanner Memorial Hospital in
Carrollton. e e
Funeral services for Brown
were held at 2 F.m Sunday in
the chaflel of Erwin-Petitt
Funeral Home. Interment was
in West Hill Cemetery.

Summerville and 57.1 percent
of the vote in Trion.
A total of 4,641 votes was
cast out of 9,272 eligible to
vote, or almost one-half the
total registered. The turnout

A few minutes later, Larry
walked across the courthouse
lobby where the votes were be
ing tallied to congratulate
Ralph. ‘“‘Ralph, congratula
tions. I appreciate the kind of
race you ran,” Larry said. “T'l

John McGraw was headed
northon Highway 100 in front
of a tractor-frailer truck driven
by Kenneth L. Dawson, 29,
Summerville, when the acci
dent occurred.
Toles reported that the
McGraw car slowed to turn left
onto County Road 21 when it
was struck in the rear by the
tractor-trailer truck.
