Chattooga Countians for the many courtesies ex
tended to me and my family during my campaign to be
your sheriff. It was a privilege to meet you and listen
to your concerns about law enforcement. Although |
was not successful, | had an opportunity to meet with
old friends and make many new friends.
Also, | congratulate my opponent on his suc
cessful and well-run campaign for sheriff.

David Koonce, 77, Summer
ville Rte. 5, was injured in the
attack at Koonce's home
around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, the
investigator reported.
About $l,OlB in cash was
by the sale of recycleable materials and volunteer efforts.

on the environment to be purchased by the Chattooga

BROUGHT BEER
The incident began when
two women, ages around 20
and 35, came to Koonce's home
and said they had brought him
a beer, according to Hill's in-
vestigative report. Koonce
identified one of the women but
didn’t know the other, Hill add
ed. They sat down inside
Koonce's house and he then
noticed that his wallet was
missing, reports stated. He
asked if they had taken the
wallet but they denied his
char%% and tried to leave, Hill
said. Koonce stopped them and
searched the area, discovering
it outside his front door,
reports indicated.
Koonce recovered the wallet
and counted his money while
the two women kefit drinking
beer, reports said. He heard so
meone outside and went to his
front door again to discover a
young man weighing about 200
pounds, reports added. The
man jumped the elderly
Koonce and knocked him to the
floor, Hill said he was told. The
man held Koonce down while
the two women took a pry bar
and opened a kitchen cabinet
where they found sls to $lB in
change, the investigator con
tinued. The three then fled the
scene in a large tan vehicle.
FORGERY
Meanwhile, four people
have been charged in connec
tion with the forgery of a check
from Northwest Georgia Ser
vices paid to Billy Hunter, 21
7th St., Trion.
Tony Ray Eller, 29, and
Wendy A. Eller, 24, both of 55
Lyerly St., Summerville, were
charged ‘with forgery while
Dorothy L. Eller, 45, and Scot
tie Lee Green, 52, both of 55
Lyerly St., Summerville, were
charged with being a party to
the crime of forgery.
Inv. Ladon Lively said the
December check was sent to
Hunter's old address in Sum
merville, where it disappeared
until showing up forged at a
Summerville super market.
The sheriff's office was also
investigating several thefts
during the past week.
Dep. Stan Mosley said so
meone entered the home of
John Brewster, Summerville
Rte. 1, Saturday and took a .20
gaufe shotgun, binoculars, two
gold rings, pellet gun with
scope and a gold chain with a
butterfly pendant.

Thursday and Friday, reported

A Trion woman has been
charged with forging a
prescription and trying to have
it filled at Big B Drugs in Sum
merville Sunday.
Henrietta P. Scoggins, 37,
Trion Rte. 1, was charged and
released on $5,000 bond.

Van Bought By Hospital Panel
The Chattooga County
Hospital Authority has
authorized the purchase of a
used van for use by the
hospital and Oak View Nursing
Home.
The action was taken dur
ing a called meeting Monday
evening at the hospital. The
1978 model eight-passenger
Ford van was bought from Carl
Sumner for $3,000 to be paid in
six monthly installments of
SSOO each.
NO REPAIRS
Dan Sweitzer, executive
director of the hospital, said
the hospital-nursing home van
could no longer be repaired in
a cost-effective manner. It had
broken down numerous times,
the final time this past Friday
on a trip to Rome to pick up

The Chattooga County
district attorney's office is
seeking to confiscate a vehicle
and jewelry seized in a drug ar
rest in late February.

behalf of District Attorney
Ralph Van Pelt.
William Adams was ar
rested on the evening of Feb.
21 in Summerville and charg
ed with possessing suspected
rock cocaine. The suit seeks to
confiscate the 1987 model
Suzuki Samuri driven -by
William Adams, a Guecci
watch, 18-inch gold chain, Guc
ci bracelet, 18-inch gold rope
with gold cross, 20-inch gold
chain and a gold horseshoe
earring.

Although the newer van
has 110,000 miles, it has new
tires, new brakes and is in *‘ex
cellent” shape, he said. A
survey of local dealers and of
state surplus property could
not turn up a van in as good
condition ?or that low of a
price, Sweitzer said.
Meanwhile, Sweitzer said a
couple of meetings between Ci
ty of Summerviltf’e, county and
Georgia Department of
Transportation (DOT) officials
have been held to consider
drainage problems at the front
of the hospital and nursing
home.
ANALYSIS
The DOT has agreed to per
form an engineering analysis
and study on whether rain
water from the Farrar Drive
and Stockade Road areas could
be diverted into a U.S.
Highway 27 storm drain rather
than it flowing onto nursing
home and hospital property.
But Sweitzer said Tuesday
morning that the DOT had
determined that the diversion
wasn't legal :

resulting in complaints from
visitors to the hospital and nur
sing home.
The authority this year
hopes to install a walkway con
necting the old and new nurs
ing home sections and build a
drive-through Fort for vehicles
