IN MEMORY OF THE DEAREST PERSON
I EVER KNEW ON HER BIRTHDAY, MARCH 15
Nora Jean White
It has been six months now that she’s been gone,
The days without her are so very long.
She was my favorite Aunt,
She was my best friend.
I don't und);rstand why it all had to end.
For some reason God took her away,
I will never ever forget the day.
She was so full of life, so full of laughter.
It is so hard living without her.
She is in a better place I know,
And someday we all must go.
I miss her so bad now that she is in heaven above,
I hope she knows how very dearly she was loved.
I love you and miss you very much
Happy Birthday

Questions On Prom,
Coaches Face Board
from front page
“It was explained to the
juniors at the outset that they
would have to sell this many
magazines or pay to get into
the prom,” Mrs. Selman said.
COACHES?
Alfred McDaniel, Lyerly,
asked the board to explain w;)f'
three high school football
coaches resigned this month.
‘“What’s really the reason
they're quitting? Can't we
work something out here?”’ He
referred to the resignations of
Marty Jackson, athletic direc
tor and head football coach,
and assistant coaches Jack
Whi%ham and Warren Hall.
“l need these coaches to
staß that’'s what I need,”
McDaniel continued. ‘‘lt’s not
accom{)lishing anything for the
kids. It’s disheartening.” He
asked the board to meet with
the coaches and ‘“‘work out’’ the
matter.
McDaniel alleged that the
resiinations accepted Monday
by the board were the result of
friction between the coaches
and administrators, but Hayes
said, “This fellow can’t tell you
that I haven't worked with
him.” The superintendent add
ed that he was not surprised by
Jackson’s resignation, but “I
am concerned that he’s leav
ing.”
gMcDaniel asked that the
board investigate reports of
dating among high school
teachers and students. Hayes
agreed that it should not be
practiced and indicated he
would “‘look into the matter.”
“Alfred, we a;()ipreciate your
glterest." he said. ‘‘We really

KEATING
The board received a writ
ten report from Tom Keating,
dropout consultant, concerning
his attendance at the secon
Southeastern Conference on
Youth-At-Risk last month.
Keating served as a substitute
?resenter during the con
erence and shared examples of
local dropout prevention pro
grams with other educators.
“The . . . conference gave me a
chance to learn, and others a
chance to benefit from the
gositive work in Chattooga
County,” hestated. Keating is
supposed to attend the April 8
board meeting. - SUG]Y
Board member Charles
Elsberry requested copies of
documentation and statistics
concerning the dropout rate
and Keating's work to reduce
it. “I'd like to get as much on
his background as I can and
see how much he’s helped since
he’s been here,”” Elsberry told
Hayes.
“I don’t know if you're go
ing to %et something like that,
but I'll work something up,”
the superintendent saitf
Keating's contract with the
board will expire in June.
SMS ATHLETICS
Elsberry indicated that
beginning a middle school
athletic programs could help
reduce the dropout rate. A pro
gram involving seventh and
eighth grade county students
would “feed” the high school
athletic program, and if
‘“‘you’ve got more kids involv
ed and they keep their grades
up to participate, the dropout
rate will decrease,” he said.
“It’s been proven in other
schools.”
Hayes said that David
Jones, principal of the Sum
merville Midxfie School, was to
visit Pepperell this week to ex
amine its athletic program. He
added that if the program is
started, the school system can
not purchase equipment for
athletes.
ROOF BIDS
The board agreed to adver
tise for bids for work to place
a gable roof on a portion of
Pennville Elementary School.
Hayes had obtained four bids
Erior to Monday's meeting, but
Isberry requested that a re
quest for segll;d bids be adver
tised once before the next
meeting. The board agreed,
although Chairman Leroy
Massey said it was not
necessary to advertise because

Dollar General chairman.
The new Dollar General

Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6

“Managers of other dis

more careful customers who
keep track of prices will check
out the new store, just out of

The second time they come
back, they’re Dollar General

Turner said the stores are
not for everybody. ‘“We don't

Turner has led Dollar

PUBLIC
NOTIFICATION
The City of Menlo Water System has
been notified by the Georgia Department
of Natural Resources that it has exceeded
Rules for coliform standards for the
month of January 1991.
Coliform bacteria are used as an in
dicator of microbiological quality. The En
vironmental Protection Agency has set an
enforceable drinking water standard and
while coliform organisms themselves
pose no threat to" health, their presence
does indicate that a source of contamina
tion might exist somewhere in the
system.
Every effort was made to locate the
cause of this problem which was due to a
chlorinator malfunction and this problem
has been corrected.
Questions or comments regarding
this public notice should go to Menlo City
Hall at 862-2440 between 9:00 a.m. and
5:30 p.m.
the project will be financed b
locaf sands. g
Hayes said the school
sytem received $118,431.22 in
sales tax receipts in January,
and has collected 36.76 percent
of preliminary 1990 property
taxes. The system is 66.66 per
cent through its current
budget, and has a bank balance
of $63,000 to be used for the
Pennville roof project.
Plans for the project, and a

“We've come a long way
since my father started the
compa;lly in 1939 in Scottsville,
Ky.,”’ Turner said. ‘“He'd buy
overstocked merchandise from
other retailers, then turn
around and sell it in small
towns around Appalachia for a
fraction of the original price. It
was the last (Eys of the
Depression, and people needed
every bargain they could get.
So Dad found plenty of
customers.”” Today, Dollar
General still buys most of its
merchandise the same way,
with some modifications and
improvements. ‘lt works even
better now than it did then,”
Turner said.
The company’s home office
is still in ggttsville. where
about 500 of the town's 4,300
residents work in its main of

“Travelers who sbofi in Scott

pany as large as Dollar General
works out of such a small
town,” Turner said, ‘‘but after
we show them around they
understand perfectly.”” Turner
attributed much of his com

town roots. ‘‘Small towns are
the heart of America,’’ he
believes. He adds that for
many years Dollar General
operated only in small towns,

their big city stores retain a
