Ezell Named
Retail Chairman
By BUDDY ROBERTS
Associate News Editor
Glenn Ezell was named
chairman of the Retail and
Small Business Council of the
Chattooga County Chamber of
Commerce during its monthly
meeting on Wednesday. Ezell
replaces outgoing chairman
Jim Richie.
Chamber Director Milford
Morgan presided at the
meeting. A total of 11 people
attended.
The council tentatively
agreed to hold the annual
Christmas parade on Sunday,
Dec. 8, with a rain date for Dec.
15. The parade would be part
of a community worship ser
vice to be held in Summerville.
Summerville Police Chief
Larry Bennett suggested that
the parade be held on a Sunday
to reduce the problems created
by diverting traffic around
tersection with County Road
206, Meeks said.
Betty S. Hankins, 35,
Menlo, was hurt in the wreck,
the troolg)er added.
A vehicle driven by Martha
Irene Smith, 53, Summerville
Rte. 5, one driven by Jeannie
Marie Hughes, 34, 51
Maplewood Dr., Summerville,
and a vehicle driven by Ms.
Hankins were involved in a col
lision while they were all east
bound on Highway 48, Cor
poral Meeks said. The driver of
the Smith car was found about
30 minutes after it had fled the
scene, reports indicated. Cor
poral Meeks quoted the driver
as saying she “‘panicked’’ after
the mishap.
ONE HURT
One person was also hurt in
a two-car accident on Highway

downtown Summerville.
Ezell suggested organizing
with the parade a community
wide worship service involving
all of the county’s churches.
“It could be a community wor
ship service to kick off the holi
day season. All the churches
could get together and enjoy
the season together. It would
make for the%)est Christmas
parade we've ever had or the
smallest, depending.”
Formal plans have not been
made, but the idea was well
received by the council. “It
sounds good if it can be work
ed,” Riciie said. Morgan add
ed that the worship service
would emphasize the religious
aspect oF Christmas rather
than commercialism.
In another matter, Morgan
outlined activities planned for
Small Business Development
Week, set for May 20-24.
Seminars are planned through
the Small Business Associa
tion on subjects including com
puters, marketing skills, ac
counting, tax planninfi‘ and
agricultural enterprises. Truett
Cathy, owner and founder of
Chick-Fil-A Restaurants, may
s];:eak to the chamber during
the week.
PROGRAMS
“This is more than just
throwing up a banner and say
ing, ‘lt’'s Small Business
Week," " Morgan said. “There
is something every day that we
can attend and will be
beneficial.”
The council also:
— Discussed a promotion
for the annual Charlie Lowry
Rodeo, set for May 3-5.
— Learned that the second
Ag Day will be held April 16,
?or;sored by the chamber's
gri-Business Committee.
— Cancelled the annual
Mother's Day Essay contest
due to-last year's poor
participation.
— Agreed not to change its
regular meeting time at 7:15
a.m. on the last Wednesday of
each month.
