NOT DUMB
“They’re not dumb kids,
sometimes they’'re the
brightest and most creative.
We must be creative to draw
from them,” she said. “They
must see the relevance of
education.”
Ms. Osborne began by
thanking Ogtimist members
for helgmf ummerville Mid

years, in paying its entrance
gae for éhtlal state science fair at
e ollege.
l"l‘%’"’itl'xoul: Delta, it’s almost
100 percent that the students
will drop out,” she ex‘glained.
“There needs to be a different
sort of educational atmosphere
for them.”
She said with Delta,
students can achieve success.
The program is housed in
Room 33 at Chattooga High
School. She invited Optimists
to drop by and see for
themselves.
“We teach a ninth grade
curriculum with the same
state-mandated objectives, but
they get more hands on ex

In the Delta program,
students study social studies,
language arts, math, and all
other regular curriculum
courses.
VOLUNTARY
“The participation is volun
tary,” Ms. Osborne explained.
““We get suggestions from
teachers and then pursue the
students.” Students in the pro
gram and parents are asked to
sign a contract. Students agree
to hfiive the program a chance,
while parents agree to monthly
parent-teacher conferences and
agree to be a part of the
progam.
s. Osborne said communi
ty service is required of all
Delta students.
“They work at the nursing
home, the recycling center, or
tutor elementary students.”
She said it gives students a
sense of belonging and in
creases self-esteem.
Another area stressed is
vocation.
“We try to find an occupa

said.
