Tax Bill
Maili
from front page
County Board of Tax
Assessors.
_ “Since these deficiencies
did not exist on your preceding
(1990) year’s (1990) digest . . .
Collins wrote Hall, state law
“directs me to condjtionally ap
prove the 1991 tax digest
and . . . therefore authorizes its
use for the collection of 1991
taxes.”
1992 CORRECTIONS
They must be corrected
before the 1992 digest is sub
mitted to the state sometime
next fall.
As for the final 1990 bills,
Hall said, it may be mid-
January before those bills are
received, sorted and mailed by
his office. Ther are to be
printed by Jim Finney, Rome,
the county’s auditor.
Hall said Finney had sent
his office some material to be
checked and corrected. It must
be sent back to Finney with the
needed information gefore the
bills can be printed, the tax
commissioner indicated.
The 1990 bills are more
complicated, he said, because
each property owner’s account
number and the flroperty map
numbers were changed when
his office went on a new com
puter system. In the future, the
county plans on ;;.rinting its
own bills, rather than having
them done by Finney.
CODES
The state also changed all
codes on property, too, Hall
said, makinf thigrocess even
more complicated. The 1991
bills were not g;;lfited by Fin
ney but by the firm from which
the county purchased Hall’s
new computer system.
When the 1990 bills arrive,
Hall said, they also must be
sorted and the bills of proper
ty owners with pending ap
peals removed from the batcfi.
The 1990 bills will contain
only the difference between the
pre{umn' inary 1989 bills — which
were used to collect taxes in
1990 — and the final 1990
digest figures.
For example, if a person
paid SIOO in tax on the
preliminary collection and if
the 1990 bill is $lO5, then that
taxpa{er will receive a net bill
of $5. If, however, the taxpayer
paid SIOO in tax on the
?rehmm' i arz collection and his
inal 1990 bill is $95, he would
be entitled to a $5 refund from
the county.

Incident
The Chattooga County
Sheriff’'s Office and the
Georg’a Bureau of Investiga
tion (GBI) are continuing to in
vestgfiate the shooting of a
Wildlife Lake Road man.
Howard ‘“Boney’’ Phillips,
Summerville Rte. 1, was shot
in his right l’f‘fi with a shotgun
at 7:42 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26.
The incident occurred at
Phillips’ home, accordin% to
Sheri?f Ralph Kellett and Inv.

It appeared that two
rounds of double-ought
buckshot were fired at Phillips,
according to Davenport. One

per thiih, reports indicated. He
was taken to Chattooga Coun
ty Hospital, treated and
dismissed. ‘
Phillips said he was talking
on his tefiaphone to a person in
Texas when he heard someone
twice call his name from out
side his house. When he look
ed around the door to see who
it was, he was shot, Phillips
said.
As he fell onto the floor,
another shotgun blast came
through the wall and door of
the house, just above his head,
Phillips said. He hunfi u(f after
screaming that he had been
shot and iialed the sheriff’s of
fice, Philliis said.
A black Chevrolet truck
was seen leaving the premises
immediately after the shooting,
Phillips said. He has offered a
reward for the arrest and con
viction of those responsible for
the shooting.
Shoplifting
A Chattooga C?unt{ man
has been charged with shoplif
ting in connection with an in
cident on Christmas Eve at
Red Food Store, Summerville.
Jackie W. Ellis, 46, Sum
merville Rte. 5, was charged
with taking cigarettes and
three T-bone steaks.
Meanwhile, a 14-year-old
boy was charged with shop_llf

He allegedly took potato
chips from the store, reported
