Council
Rescinds
Pay Vote
By JULIE GRIFFIS
Staff Writer
In an anticlimactic three
minute meeting the Trion
Town Council Dec. 30 voted to
rescind the mayor and council
pay raise approved by the
council Nov. 21.
The action was rescinded
becausle it was glc;lt advil'itised
roperly, according to Mayor
?Io;l')t fiilliams. . .
Georgia law required that
the advertisement notifying
the public of the pay changes
be advertised in the county’s
l(;lgal organ thr(;e we:lllifs priorfto
the opening of qualifying for
the Jfi. 2%lecti?)n. e
However, the advertise
ment ap%eared three weeks
prior to the elections, not the
opening of %}mlifying. Qualify
ing opened Nov. 13. The adver
tisement first ran Nov. 28.
According to Williams, the
advertisement placed in The
Summerville News just more
than three weeks ago, due to its
iming, was not in ment
with the letier of thelaw." He
added that he discovered the
error.
No action can be taken on
the matter until 1995, accor
ding to Williams. Georgia law
says that a governing council
cannot increase or lower its
compensation durin% its term.
No new council seats will be
open until 1995.
In other action the council
voted to recommend to the new
council, which will be seated
Feb. 1, that it set a policy on
the reimbursement of expenses
for the mayor and council. The
vote was unanimous.
