NEW MAYOR
Mayor-elect Allen Plunkett
told ’I?l'le Summerville News
he’s “delighted” to have been
elected mayor, ‘“‘but Hoyt's
still the mayor and I don’t
want to infringe on his ball
game.”
In a prepared statement
Plunkett sai£ “I would like to
thank the citizens of Trion for
their overwhelming support in
the recent mayoral race and
elections. :
“With their sufi%rt, I seek
to lead the Town of Trion in be
ing the finest place in which to
live. I believe the issues of a
town belonito the leaders and
populace. Therefore, during my
term as mayor, I will kee'FrEhe
business of the Town of Trion
before the people and in the
open.
“I wrill write regularly to
inform the citizens of the
town’s business and inviting
continued interaction and sup
port for what is best for all of
us.”
Plunkett said he plans to
occasionall¥‘ write columns for
the Trion Facts or advertise
issues in The Summerville
to build the new facility.
Chattoo% County Commis
sioner Jim Parker has agreed
to give the library some five
acres on Farrar Drive for the
new facilitg. If the money is
available, Parker has said, he
would plan to match the state
ggnt with the $347,000 in local
ds. No money for the gro-
Lect is in the county’s 1992
udget.
COST
Total cost of the project is
estimated at $1,392,857.
Ms. Stewart has said that
1992-93 is likely to be the final
flgar of the state-sponsored
ibrary construction program.
No new staff woul% be add
ed to the proposed head
quarters building, she said.
The current building on
South Commerce Street at
Martin Street contains 7,500
square feet. It has been
plagued by a leaky roof since
its construction.
the pedbim o 1
e proposed new library
headquarters building would
contain 12,500 square feet, the
minimum regmred by the
state. The additional ?ace
would allow se?arate and ex
panded s&ace or adults and
children, Ms. Stewart explain
ed. S;iace would also be
available for special collections,
such as the resource material
used by Robert Banker in
writing his history of Chat
tooq‘a County.
he state grant also in
cludes money for furnishings,
e?uipment and for automation
of the library, she continued.
The library already needs
more space for its litertae?
volunteer program, she noted.
The library is now paying
$520 per month to lease space
in another building adjacent to
the library, she noted. That
money wouldn’t have to be
spp;t with a new facility, she
said.
Gov. Miller's budget will be
considered by the 1992 session
of the Georgia General
Assembly, which will start
Monday.
News.
“I want to be the people’s
mayor at heart and in my deci
sions,” Plunkett said, adding
that he'd like to thank the peo
