GTE To Build New
Central Office Unit
Modern Phone System This Year
GTE had some good news
for Chattooga County for the
new year.
After years of delay, the
telephone cognpan{ plans to
spend $3.2 million this year to
install a new modern com
munications system in
Summerville.
While the systems in the
Trion, Menlo and Lyerly ex
changes will be improved, they
will not have the same up-to
date services that wilr be
available to those in the Sum
merville exchan%e. At least for
1992. GTE has plans to update
those exchanfies.
Rodney Hannah, Chat
too%a County service manager
for GTE, announced this week
that GTE’s Telephone Opera
tions had allocated the funds to
Chattooga.
The digital switching
system to be installed in the
S‘l'Jmmerville central office will
provide telephone customers in
that exchange with advanced
telecommunications ‘“‘second to
none,”’ Hannah said.
OCT. 31
The work is scheduled to be
completed by Oct. 31 of this
year, Hannah said. The system
will be connected bfy fiber op
tic cable and will offer quicker,
quieter transmissions, he
continued.

Trion Ignores
DOT Cover Law
By JULIE GRIFFIS
Staff Writer
It’'s apparent the Trion
waste water treatment plant
has been in violation of Georgia
Deßartment of Trans&)ortatxon
(DOT) laws regarding the
transportation of uncovered
slugfi:e.
at according to Bill
Chapmon, Public Safeg Com
mission (PSC) Chief Enforce
ment officer. However, the
PSC may have its hands tied.
The Summerville News
observed a dump truck leaving
the sewerage facility at about
12:30 p.m. New Year’s Day car
rying sludge that was
uncovered.
When notified of the ap
parent DOT violation, the next
day, plant Superintendent
Terry Sentell acknowledged
that the sludge was being
transported uncovered.
NOT WORKING
“The arms on the truck
that pull back the cover aren’t
working,” he said. “It’'s my
fault it wasn't covered. We just
never a(,)t around to getting it
fixed. We were concerned with
other problems at the plant
and it just slépdped our minds.”
Sentell added that he’s not
sure how long the implement
has been in disrepair, but
would see that it’s fixed as
soon as possible.
According to Chapmon, the
PSC enforces DOT laws on the
roadways. The truck was
travelin%south on Hi%leway 27
toward Summerville before it
turned right on Memorial
Drive.
But, according to Chal]l)-
mon, if the town owns the
truck, the PSC has no jurisdic
tion over a violation and its
hands are tied.
“It is illegal to transport
any material that can blow or
bounce off a truclégn the road
way untatged," apmon ex
plained. “But, the legislature
took government vehicles out
of our (PSC) jurisdiction a cou-
R‘le of years ago.” He said the
'own of Trion is responsible
for making sure the law is
enforced.
BOUNCING
The sludge in the truck was
clearlg “bouncing,’”’ even
though no sludge was seen
leaving the truck bed.
Chapmon said he would
have someone look into the
matter and verify ownership of
the truck. That was done on
Tuesday.
The advanced calling
features will not be available
thig fi'eaxi in the Trion.HMenlo
and Lyerly exchanges, Hannah
?aégl: GTE plans to add them
ater.
GTE Telephone ”g)cre
rations-South Areais b in
Tampa, Fla. It serves 3.7
million access lines in nine
Southern states, Georfiia.
Alabama, Florida, Kentucky,
North Carolina, South
Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia
and West Virginia.
The Town of Trion does
own the two dump trucks us
ed at the facility, accordin% to
Sentell. One was in the shop
and only one was operating
New Year’s Day.
““If the truck is city-owned,
it’sn?&to the local government
to e sure it remains in com
pliance with state law and ac
cesses fines,”” Chapmon said.
He added that he has the
same problem with trucks own
ed by the federal government.
““If we see a truck in viola
tion, we stop it regardless of
who owns it, he sais. “Ifit’s a
government-owned truck we
make a report that is given to
the governmental bOdK'" he ex
plained. It's up to them how
the}' handle it.”
f the truck had not been
owned by the town, Chapmon
said, a fine from SIOO to SSOO
would have been assessed,
dependiné on the jurisdiction
of the Chattooga County
courts.
Live Grenade
Exploded
At Landfill
A hand grenade found in
the Tldt“;gs community was
detonated by the Georgia
Bureau of Investigation
‘Tuesdafi, according to
Ralph Kellett, Chattooga
County sheriff.
Wayne Niederhuth
reported that the aged
grenade had been found
about 4 p.m. Monday while
workers were clearing brush
and unearthed the device,
Sheriff Kellett said.
Lt. Ken Parker and Dep.
Bruce Peek brought the
enade to the sheriff’s of
g::e and notified federal
authorities and the GBI.
Sheriff Kellett said a
hole was dug at the Chat
tooga County landfill near
noon Tuesday. The grenade
was placed in the hole and
wrz:fped with detonation
cord, he added, and then
exploded.
It was live and created
‘“‘a tremendous blast when it
went off,”’ the sheriff said.
The ‘‘pineapple’”’ type
g}'enade left sel\;eral pieces
