Trion Recounts
Votes, Winners
Not Affected
The outcome was the same,
though the candidates receiv
ed fewer votes than thought
earlier.
That was the result of the
Town of Trion election recount
Tuesday.
According to Iv{)oll manager
Clifford “Tip” McCollum, 32
votes were counted twice after
the Jan. 2 election.
“When we counted the
m:]\}'oral votes, we put the
ballots in two stacks. Then
when we did the Council votes
we counted 50 to a stack,
double-checked and tallied
them,” McCollum explained.
“Somebody got hold of two
stacks, so one was counted
twice.”
The mayoral votes were not
affected, onlg ballots cast for
council-members.
ORIGINAL
Originally it was thought
that Roy Brown received 371
votes; Jack Williams 355; Roy
Bowers 289; Dwight Arden
268; Henry Miller 218; and
Robert “Butch” Overstreet 88.
The only candidates that
could have been affected by the
counting discrepency were
Bowers and Arden, who had a
21-Yoint spread.
n the final tally, Brown
received 338 votes; Williams,
326; Bowers 252; Arden 230;

TWO PEOPLE INJURED IN ACCIDENT ON U. S. 27 MONDAY EVENING
Victims Were Treated At Chattooga County Hospital
went out of control on a rain
slickened curve and went off
the roadway.
SECOND WRECK
Two minutes later, Charity
Allgood, 19, 283 Allgood St.,
Trion, was hurt in another one
car accident on U. S. 27, 1.2
miles south of Summerville,
the troo?er said. She was taken
to Chattooga Hospital in a
private vehicle, reports
indicated.
Trooper Carter said the
Allgood car was headed north
when it tried to brake, went out
of control on the rain-slickened
road, traveled off the east
shoulder of the road, overturn

Miller 182; and Overstreet 77.
The error was first
discovered by outgoing Coun
cilman Arden. Trion had about
a 68 percent turnout with 509
of its 774 registered voters
castiniballots in the election.
“I kept thinking about it
and it seemed like there were
too many votes,” he said.
Arden said he called Recorder
June Grose, who set the re
count wheels in motion.
509 VOTES
With 509 votes cast, the
total number of votes should
not have exceeded 1,527.
According to Mrs. Grose,
the total tally could be 1,527 or
less, but not more. Due to some
invalid ballets, however, those
with erasure marks that could
not be deciphered and those
with four or more votes for
council slots, were thrown out.
Of the 50 that were counted
twice in the original count, 32
were deemed valid.
Poll workers participatin%
in the recount were Haze
Willis, Bettfi Elrod, Clifford
“Tl})” McCollum, Gertie Nunn
and Bo Sprayberry.
On hand for the recount
were Mrs. Grose, Miller,
Arden, Bowers and Plunkett.
Outgoing mayor Hoyt
Williams made a brief ap
pearance during the recount.
