Rocky Mountain
Project Pushed
The Rocky Mountain Pro
ject — Georgia’s largest con
struction project — is now 42.5
percent complete and remains
on schedule, according to Dale
Murphy, senior project
manager at Oglethorpe Power
Cor;fi:ration.
e ?umped-storage hydro
electric facility is scheduled for
completion in May, 1995 at an
estimated cost of S7OO million.
Des‘iifned to meet peak
electric I-&eneration needs, the
Rocky Mountain Project’s
three 353,000-horsepower tur
bines will be capable of
generating uf.v to 848
megawatts of electricity and
sugplying approximatel{
290,000 homes at pea
demand.
“We are very pleased with
the progress being made on the
project,”” said Murphy.
HALFWAY POINT
According to Murphy, con
struction is nearing the
halfway point on the project
that covers 5,000 acres in
md County. Since the $157
illion general construction
contract was awarded to Power
Plant Constructors (PPC) in
September, 1990, significant
work has been completed in the
project’s major features: the
main dam, 40 percent com
plete; powerhouse, 17 percent
complete; lower reservoir, 36
percent complete; up{)er reser
voir, 8 percent complete; aux
iliary reservoirs, completed.
At the main dam, which will
be 120-feet r}xl\lzfl:l and 900-feet
long, a one-million cubic yard
excavation and geological
reFa.ir has been completed. The
left approach wall and south
abutment foundation treat
ment have been completed. Six
of the eight dams in the lower
reservoir have been completed.
Excavation has been com
pleted and 24 percent of the
concrete has been ?llaced for
the 16-story powerhouse, 13
stories of which will be under
water. A total of 167,000 cubic

RESERVOIRS
The two auxiliary reser
voirs have been completed and
will provide future recreational
opfilc;‘rtunities for public
fishing, camping, swimming,
boating, hiking and a visitors
center. To date, 29 fish attrac
tors have been installed, seven
fishing jetties and three boat
ramps have been built, and one
mile along the banks has been
graded for better fishing. Dur
ing the peak recreation season,
the site will accommodate over
1,400 visitors daily.
Massive quantities of con
crete, steel, pipe, wood, rock
and landfill will be used to
build the finerating plant. For
example, Murphy said the pro
{)ect will use enouih concrete to
uild a sidewalk from Rome to
Chicago. It will use over two
million board feet of lumber,
enough steel to fill 187 50-ton
rail cars, and move enou%h
earth to fill approximately
60,000 swimming pools.
Murphy said he feels very
confident about the project and
the workforce at this point in
construction. Approximately
950 construction workers,
engineers and support staff
currently are at work on the
roject. When construction
flits its Yeak in 1992, the pro
ject will staff over 1,000
employees.
“O%lethorpe Power has
joined forces with some of the
finest contractors and subcon
tractors to build Georgia's
largest construction project,”
said Murphy. ‘“We have had an
outstanding safety record for a
project and workforce of this
size and continue to remain on
schedule.”

Senior Master Sgt. Richard

ject has made a major impact
on Floyd County. In 1991, the
groyect paid over $400,000 in
loyd County taxes, and that
amount should increase
significantly next year. Addi
tionally, the project has con
tributed substantial spin-off
business to the area through
the £nurchase of equipment,
building and electric supplies,
and patronafie to local service
companies, Murphy said.
Upon completion of the pro
ject in 1995, (gglethorpe Power
will ol?rerate the Rocky Moun
tain Project and own apFrox
imately 75 percent of the facili
ty. Georgia Power will own 25
percent.
Oglethorpe Power Corp. is
headquartered in Tucker and is
the nation’s largest generation
and transmission coogerative.
Oglethorpe provides elec
tric power to 39 of Geor%ia's 42
consumer-owned Electric

than two million Georgians in
about 71 percent of the state’s
land area.
